Senator John McCain, a man who served his country with honor and valor in the Vietnam war as a pilot and POW, is ending his career as a sadly misinformed and bull-headed senator. The latest example of his folly is his hiring of Elizabeth O'Bagy as his legislative assistant (and adviser on Syria). It has been revealed that O'Bagy fabricated her PhD credentials.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/27/mccain-hires-controversial-syria-analyst-who-inflated-credentials/
That's OK, Senator. Go ahead and hire her. You will learn that people with fabricated credentials tend to give false information and bad advice.
Keep in mind that McCain wants us to intervene militarily in Syria and send US troops into this cauldron of killing between tribes and religious factions, where both sides consist of very bad people.
Based on this woman's advice? Is this how we are formulating our foreign policy?
* Full disclosure. Yes, I voted for McCain in 2008. Considering his opponent (Obama), I don't apologize for it. But I don't think now this man would have made a good president. His seeming arrogance badly clouds his judgement in my view. I will welcome the day when he leaves office.

The Beer in Germany
I am cross-posting my latest article which appears on my second blog (Gary's German Beer Page). It recounts my just-concluded trip to Germany from the point of view of...
BEER.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://derfouse.blogspot.com/2013/09/last-visit-to-germany.html
Avoid the Major Brews
I just returned from my latest trip to Germany. I visited Munich, Passau, Erlangen and Nuremberg and sampled many brews. Here is what I observed.
My first stop was a two-day stopover in Munich since my Lufthansa flight was from Chicago to Munich. I stayed in the western suburb of Pasing. My first meal was at a nearby inn and they were serving two brands, Becks, the major brewery from Bremen in northern Germany, and Munich's Spaten. I tried the Becks Pils first, and it was highly disappointing. I then switched to Spaten, which I had never been fond of anyway. Again, disappointing but better than the Becks.
The following day, I walked around Munich. I had lunch at a pizza place, and their brew was Thurn and Taxis, the major brewery of Regensburg. It was alright-better than the two from the previous evening. I also stopped in for a liter at the Augustiner Beer hall. Pretty good.
I had wanted to go to the Hirschgarten, reputed to be Europe's largest beer garden, but the weather was not favorable. Beer gardens and rain don't mix. They also feature Augustiner, so what I had at the Augustiner hall must have been just as good.

Augustiner Hall Munich
One thing I noticed in Munich and also in Passau was that many restaurants are not featuring just one brand, but a couple of brands with a variety of styles such as pils, helles, hefe or dunkles. I stuck with the pils and helles. I also noticed that the traditional custom of a draft beer taking 7 minutes in the process seems to have gone by the boards.
I then took the train to Passau (not waiting for the Oktoberfest to begin). My first night in Passau I took the bus to the Herbstdult, the Autumn Fest, which is mostly a luna park type affair with kids' rides, booths for brats and beer plus two large spaces for the beer fest scene.
Passau has a few breweries, and the fest was featuring Innstadt and Hacklberg, two breweries which have merged. I wound up going two nights and I can say that their fest beer was the best of my trip. Drinking them in restaurants was a different story. Other breweries in Passau are Loewenbrau (no relation to the one in Munich) and Aldersbacher, both of which were alright. By the way, Passau's historiography says that Adolf Hitler, before coming to power, would visit the owner of the Loewenbrau brewery, Franz Stockbauer, when he visited the city. The brewery is located on Franz Stockbauerweg.

After three days in Passau, I was on the train to Erlangen, my prime destination since here is where I spent my Army years.
Erlangen has basically two breweries, Kitzmann, the oldest and the best) and Steinbach, which was re-instituted several years ago. Both have eating and drinking facilities at their breweries. Kitzmann has a nice stube and beer garden while Steinbach has a cellar restaurant and bar above which seems to be a favorite with the happy hour crowd.

Above Kitzmann beer garden
Steinbach's beer is not to my taste because it has a hefe quality to it. That's why I prefer Kitzmann and drinking it at their brewery was one of the best of my sojourn. One evening, however, I stopped into the Steinbach bar just to check it out and ran into a friend from the city archives. I joined him and his friends for a beer, and through him managed to get a free Steinbach polo shirt.

Another beer that has managed to get into the Erlangen restaurant and kneipe market is Kulmbacher Moenchof. I didn't think it was that great, but I did have a Kulmbacher pils from the bottle and it was pretty good.
Other beers I tried in Erlangen:
Jever in a bottle- a northern brew not bad
Greif of nearby Forcheim- OK
Held from the Fraenkische Schweiz area near Erlangen- OK
Aufsesser from Rothenbach in Franconia-pretty good.

I also had an Efes Plzen (Turkish) while in a Turkish food place. This is a quality beer which I loved when in Turkey.
In addition, while dining in a Bohemian-German restaurant in Erlangen, they were featuring Bernhard, a Czech beer, which was also nice.
I also spent a day in Nuremberg. I try to avoid Tucher, the main Nuremberg, brewery and a smaller one, Lederer. In addition, the nearby Zirndorfer beer from the nearby village of Zirndorf, is one of the worst beers in Germany, to my taste anyway. At lunch I had a Veldensteiner, from an old Bavarian brewery that imports to the US. Not bad. For dinner I was a guest at my friend, Tony Gentile and his Italian restaurant, Osteria Da Toni in nearby Stein. Since he served Tucher and Zirndorfer, I went with the wine.
You may be getting the impression I am not as crazy about German beer as this blog suggests. Not true, but I think I have brought home an important lesson. In recent years, many of the largest German brewing companies have bought up many smaller breweries and become mass produced to the point that that they have compromised on quality-just trying to appeal to the largest taste market. This has resulted in what some Germans call, "industrial beer." Thus, it is a good idea to:
1 Stick to local brews wherever you are
2 Go for the smaller and less-known breweries. Avoid the large, well-known brands.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See? I can write a post without offending anybody.
BEER.

The Persecution of Christians
Hat tip Investigative Project on Terrorism and Philly.com
Steve Emerson's Investigative project on Terrorism has cross-posted an article by Stu Bykofsky, a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News, which I think is important enough to also cross-post here. It concerns the world's inaction to the on-going persecution of Christians in Muslim lands.
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20130927_Turn_the_other_cheek_.html#8g4cFetkPbLq17uI.99
And why the Christians? Well, the Jews were basically driven out of Muslim countries in the late 1940s when Israel was created. To kill the Jews, they will have to conquer Israel. The Christian minority, however, is there for the killing.
Is it not time for Christians and Jews to stand together? And don't forget the Buddhists, Baha'i and Hindus. It is disgraceful that the world community, as represented by the UN and major powers like the US, will not raise their voices against what is happening to Christians in Muslim lands. We are so concerned with giving refuge to Islamic refugees (real and imagined-like the Brothers Tsarnaev) that we forget about who the real refugees are these days.
I am not calling for the US to send in the Marines. What I do expect, however, is that President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and our UN ambassador Samantha Power raise their voices publicly. This they have not done. I expect the US to make it clear to the countries involved that continued aid will depend on how they treat their religious minorities. I would also expect the US (and other Western countries) to open its arms to Christian and other religious minority refugees. We could also restrict immigration from Islamic countries until this persecution ( not to mention terrorism) stops. (Save your cards and letters. This is not the first time I have said this.)
Instead, we get silence from our leaders all over the West. Will we stand by and allow another Holocaust to occur at the hands of a latter-day Nazi force? I say again; save your cards and letters. What is being done across the Islamic world to its religious minorities is pure Nazism.

Diplomacy Obama/Kerry Style
Two earth-shattering diplomatic announcements to report.
1 After much prodding and meetings between John Kerry and his Russian counterpart, the UN Security Council has passed a resolution-a resolution- saying that Syria must give up its chemical weapons. If they don't, there will be....
consequences.
What those consequences would be would require another resolution.
http://news.yahoo.com/deal-reached-un-resolution-syria-weapons-221308298.html
Of course, Kerry's counterpart, the Russianwind surfer, er foreign minister, still maintains that the chemical weapons attack carried out in Syria was by persons still to be determined. That means it has not been proven that Assad's forces carried out the attack- according to him. That will require more investigation, documentation and facts, not just allegations.
2 And this just breaking: President Obama has just announced that he has spoken to the Iranian president.
"Ah wunnerful, ah wunnerful, ah."
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/27/obama-says-has-spoken-to-rouhani/
"EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton later described those talks as “substantial” and said they had set the stage for a new round of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program Oct. 15-16 in Geneva."
Ah yes. the Baroness Lady Catherine Ashton, who has already met several times with the Iranians with no success.

She's the one on the right with EU head Herman van Rompuy
So let the talks begin. Let the talks drag out. Let the talks provide all the time the Iranians and Assad to complete their dirty work. Seems like we've been down this road before.

May I suggest as negotiator the one man uniquely qualified to represent the US?

More Disturbing Photos of NYC Muslim Day Parade

-Urban Infidel
I am cross-posting the article from Creeping Sharia. For even more photos go to the original at Urban Infidel. The 2013 Muslim Day Parade in New York featured lots of jihad flags and pro-Mohammed Morsi-Muslim Brotherhood T-shirts. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly also attended.

Update on the Hitler-Passau Mystery
I am still looking into the story about old reports that Adolf Hitler almost drowned as a 4-year-old child while living in Passau. The story is essentially that Hitler fell through a hole in the ice of the Inn River in January 1894 and was saved by his 4-year-old playmate, Johann Kuehberger, whose father was the owner of the apartment building where the Hitler family lived at 31 Kapuzinerstrasse in Passau, now 5 Kapuzinerstrasse. According to a recently-discovered old news article in the Donau Zeitung, the incident (no names provided) reportedly happened "below the military hospital" (on the bank of the Inn River). Kuehberger, who went on to become a prominent priest, later told his successor that he was the one who had saved Hitler.
The story has long been part of Passau lore and was repeated in a book by former Passau resident Anna Rosmus, who as a schoolgirl, became notorious in the city when she attempted to research the town's Nazi past for a writing contest. She became the subject of a movie ("The Nasty Girl") and mentioned the story in a subsequent book, "Growing up where Hitler lived". Rosmus now lives in the US and his written extensively on Passau's history during the Third Reich..
http://garyfouse.blogspot.com/2013/09/passau-cont.html
The story is recounted below in German in the Wochenblatt, where it is mentioned that the incident happened "below the military hospital" (on the bank of the Inn River).
http://www.wochenblatt.de/nach
"Tatsächlich befand sich das Garnisonslazarett auf der von Hitlers Elternhaus in der Kapuzinerstraße direkt gegenüber liegenden Innseite, wo heute die Altstadtschule ist."
("In reality, the military (garrison) hospital was located directly opposite Hitler's parents house on Kapuzinerstrasse on the Inn where today, the Old Town School is located").
The Swiss organ Blick includes a copy of the original article from the Donau Zeitung.
http://www.blick.ch/news/ausland/rettete-ein-pfarrer-den-vierjaehrigen-hitler-aus-dem-inn-id1720734.html
Below is the website for the present-day Grundschule, also known as St Nikola School and formerly known as the Altstadtschule (Old Town School). It is located at 11 Nikolastrasse close to the Inn River bank opposite, but not directly across from the Hitler residence.
http://www.passau.de/Stadt,Buerger-Politik/Bildung/Schulen/Volksschulen.aspx?view=~/kxp/orgdata/default&ORGID=%7B273E4180-C572-4E09-837C-9C172AC741FF%7D
richten/passau/regionales/Hitler-Passau;art1173,86512

If the Donau Zeitung report was accurate, then the life-saving incident would have happened above.
Top map: Nikolastrasse 11, bottom map Kapuzinerstrasse 5. Note Marienbruecke (bridge) as point of reference in both maps. Both sites would be a few hundred yards from the bridge but in opposite directions.
Below: A history of the school, in which the site is listed as a lazarett (military hospital) in the early 19th century.
http://www.vs-st-nikola.de/html/chronik.html
If this was actually the site of the incident then my original premise that it must have happened directly behind the Hitler apartment building on the bank of the Inn would be in error. It should also be noted that other accounts have cast doubt on the entire story since the Inn River was much more fast flowing then than now due largely to later construction of two hydroelectric plants on the river, which have lessened its flow. Others have questioned whether Kuehberger, himself only 4-years-old at the time, could have performed the rescue act. Others have claimed that the incident could have happened in one of the numerous nearby streams or even in a city fountain In addition, the bank at that time was described as steep, thus lessening the possibility of such a rescue (see below):
It seems plausible that if there are varying accounts to the exact location of the incident, then the site could also have been directly behind the Hitler/Kuehberger residence, which would make more sense given their ages at the time. That would mean, however, that the Donau Zeitung was in error as to the exact location. (Such things have been known to happen in the media, you know.)
While in Erlangen this past week, I recounted my story to a friend in the Erlangen Archive office who checked with a colleague in the office of the Passau Catholic Archives. According to the latter, the story has not been 100% confirmed to this day. I will be writing to the Passau office this week to try and obtain further details.

Biden and Obama Do Lunch (Again)
Noon at the White House. Joe Biden and the president are in the Oval Office watching Harry Reid in Congress droning on about how he hopes Assad isn't kidding about turning over those weapons.
JB. Hey, Mr. President. This is boring. How about we get something to eat?
BO. Sounds good. I don't think that vote's gonna go well anyway. How about that burger joint you took me to a couple of years ago?
JB. Oh, that joint just closed down. The owner said he couldn't afford all that health care for all his workers.
BO. Is that right?
JB. Yeah, but I got a joint in Delaware I've known since I was a kid. Best burgers in the state.
BO. You sure?
JB. Trust me. I flipped burgers there when I was in high school. To this day, it's the best job I ever had.
BO. OK. Call for Air Force One. Hey, Jay! If the press asks, I'm consulting with Putin. Or better yet, he's consulting with me. Should we invite Hillary?
JB. Is she here?
BO Yeah, she showed up to make some statement about Syria. Has to keep getting in her face time before 2016.
JB Yeah, well I wanted to talk to you about that. Why don't just you and I go?
BO OK, Joe. Whatever you say. One thing though. I wanna go incognito. That way I don't get a lotta questions.
JB Good idea. Here. Put on this Cub hat. Nobody'll recognize ya.

En route to Delaware
BO. What's that you're reading, Joe?
JB. History, Mr President. About Hitler. You know with Assad and all that, you know what they say," If you forget the past, you're doomed to repeat the future."
BO. What's the name of the book?
JB. "I was Hitler's Toothbrush".
JB The writer says if Hitler had brushed his teeth more often, he might have won the war.
"And that's a big fu----' deal."
At the burger joint
BO Where is everybody?
JB. I don't know. When I worked here, we had over 50 burger flippers. I remember one day, a lot of guys went on vacation, and I had to make over 200 burgers in one hour. To this day, it's the greatest thing I ever did in my life.
The manager walks up.
Manager. Hey, Joe! How ya doin?
JB. Good. Where's all da woikas?
M. Had to lay most of 'em off. Can't afford to pay for all their health care. Who's yer friend?
JB. Oh, uh, dis is Barry.
M. Nice to meet ya, Barry. Cub fan, eh? Well, enjoy your burgers. I gotta get back to work.
JB You know, Boss, I wanted to talk to you about that 2016 race. You know I'm thinking about running.
BO Yeah, but what about Hillary?
JB (voice rising) Hillary? What about her? After that screw up in Benghazi, she ain't fit to run anything let alone the country, darn it.
BO Watch it, Joe. I told you we don't talk about Benghazi.
JB Sorry, Boss.
BO Listen Joe, don't worry about a thing. You know, when it gets to be nut crunchin' time, I'll have your back.
JB I knew I could count on you, Mr President.
BO. Hey Joe. Look in the kitchen. You see that cook? The fat guy with the sleeveless undershirt.
JB. What about him?
BO. What about him? He's packing the burger patties in his armpits. That's what about him.
JB Hey, that's nothin'. You outta see how he makes the donuts.

"This is Air Force One to Base. Notify Bethesda we are en route with Silver Tongue. ETA 10 minutes, over."
JB. Hey, Mr.
My Thoughts on Kenya
Warning: Graphic images

While in Germany and operating with only an IPad, i was not able to write long blog postings. It is now time to write down my thoughts on this latest atrocity. It seems like the last time I vented my outrage it was the London slaying of a British army soldier by two men who proudly proclaimed why they did it.
In the name of Islam.
What shall I write that is different this time? I knew when I wrote the last one that it was only a matter of time before another shocking incident hit the world, just like Mumbai, just like Madrid, just like the London bus and subway bombings, just like 9-11, just like Benghazi, just like Boston. So here it is. What has changed? Will a few more people wake up and admit the truth?
Certainly not Frank Bruni. He writes for the New York Times and had a most timely piece this week on the success story of Somali immigration in the US and how they are helping their homeland.
Certainly not New York Times writer James Fergusson. The title of his article says it all.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/24/opinion/the-west-need-not-fear-its-young-muslims.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Certainly not Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for CAIR. "What difference does it make," (echoing Hillary Clinton?) "if some of the attackers were American Somali Muslims?" asks Hooper. After all, "CAIR condemns terrorism in all its forms", etc. Even more timely was CAIR's 2013 report on Islamophobia in the US. Next year's edition should focus on Islamophobia in Kenya-a more real issue.
http://nypost.com/2013/09/24/us-terrorists-dont-matter-islamic-american-advocates/
In the latest attack, Muslims were encouraged to identify themselves to the attackers so they could be released. Non-Muslims were executed-men, women and children. And not just shot, mind you. Throats were cut and limbs were severed according to the reports. The thoughtful attackers even brought along a test, Arabic text (the Koran?), which victims were told to read. If they couldn't read it or answer questions about Islam, they were killed.
Because they were not Muslims.
Want some more horrific detail about what happened to some of the victims before they were killed? Tundra Tabloids (Finland) has this:
http://tundratabloids.com/2013/09/many-of-the-massacred-victims-in-nairobi-kenya-were-brutally-tortured-before-being-murd
But we are even now still assured that Islam is a religion of peace. Of course it is. We dare not say otherwise lest we be the bad guys-the haters.
And don't just think it was Somalis, some of whom from the US. It is believed that this charming British woman, Samantha Lewthwaite, widow of one of the 7-7-05 London attackers, was involved. She is being sought by Kenyan police.
The attacks and atrocities are literally outrunning the ability of myself and other chroniclers of this madness to keep up. There are so many new stories arising every day, it is impossible to keep up.
So what can I say that I didn't say after the latest London massacre? The facts are the same. What happened in Nairobi is just waiting to happen right here in the US. And when it does, the odds are it will be done by young men who were brought here as "refugees" by our enlightened US Government-even as they prepare to bring in tens of thousands more from the same general part of the world, Syria, Iraq, and Somalia.
So we await the next attack.

So says a University of Maryland professor in an email welcoming students to the new semester. Did he get his topics mixed up? Perhaps, his addressees? It happens with e-mails, you know.

Hat tip Vlad Tepes
Vlad Tepes has picked up this story from Canada of a convicted Somali-Canadian terrorist, who, after being released from prison, wound up dying in Syria (and not from cancer). A Canadian mosque in announcing his death, has asked for prayers for the departed soul. CTV News has the report.

(Unlike that Canadian mosque, this is not a call for prayers for this guy.)

General David Petraeus Hounded at CUNY
Hat tip to Campus Reform
Retired General David Petraeus was hired to teach at City University of New York. On Monday, he showed up for his first day and was met by heckling students who accused him of being a a "war criminal". Watch this sickening video.

I wonder how many of those pukes have ever worn the uniform of their country-or ever would. This is the cancer that infests our universities. I bet you a dollar they learned this crap from their professors.
