The Protests From the Perspective of a Muslim Scholar

Hat tip to Joe for sending me this article.

Mamoun Fandy is a Muslim scholar with many years experience in the West. In this piece for Al Arabiya, he accuses the West of having an "Islam complex". He says that Muslims have a right to be outraged in the wake of the anti-Mohammad video that has been blamed for the violent protests breaking out in the Muslim world. Let's see what he has to say and then respond.

http://english.alarabiya./2012/09/26/240233.html

Fist of all, Fandy is trying to play the victim here. Excuse me, Sir, but we are the victims (the US). We have had 4 of our people brutally murdered in Libya  and seen our flag burned in several other countries as mobs-yes mobs- attack our embassies.

Does the West have an "Islam complex"? We would have to be brain dead not to. After 9-11 and having seen daily images of violent mobs screaming, "Death to America", watching suicide bombings against innocents, beheadings and threats coming out of mosques against the West, Jews and Christians, what are we supposed to think?

Mr Fandy paints Muslims as victims, but in almost every Islamic country, non-Muslims are being persecuted, killed, driven out and their places of worship bombed or burned to the ground. Keep in mind that the producer of the video, "The Innocence of Muslims" himself is a Coptic Christian immigrant from Egypt. Perhaps, he has some grievances also. I myself would not have produced such a video, and I don't go around mocking anyone else's prophet, but a little perspective needs to be applied here.

Mr Fandy should also be honest and admit that we in the West have bent over backwards to be accommodating to Muslims and not hold them responsible for the acts of others. In fact, political correctness has placed a giant shield over them, so to speak. Mr Fandy is flat out wrong when he says that Islam is the only religion in the West that is open to criticism. Christianity is criticized every day in America because of our free speech. We complain when somebody exhibits a crucifix of Jesus Christ in a jar of urine and sells it as art. However, we don't riot and kill people, much less ambassadors.  Jews around the world are subject to rising anti-Semitism, most of which is fueled by Muslims. Where do you see Jews committing mayhem in response?

Mr  Fandy should examine the hate within his own community. Why the hate directed towards Christians and Jews? We know the reason. Why the hate between Sunni and Shia?

Yes, there are very negative stereotypes directed at Muslims. The innocent victims are the peaceful Muslims who have no desire to engage in any violent Jihad against anyone. The just want to go on with their lives and support their families. If they are not rioting, are they "bad Muslims", Mr Fandy?

The problem that so many Muslims in other countries have is understanding that in America, we have to tolerate this kind of speech. I do every May at UC Irvine when the Muslim Student Union has their week of anti-Israel speakers, many of whom are anti-American and anti-Semitic. I listen to them. Then I try to challenge them with my own free speech-not to insult Islam-but to point out where they are wrong and being hateful themselves. If Fandy wants us to restrict our free speech rights, he has a fight on his hands.

How do we change our "Islam complex" as Fandy calls it? First of all, the terror and the violence has to stop. The violent, supremist and hateful rhetoric against other religions has to stop. Another thing that the jihadists have to do is give up on the jihad itself. Give up the ideal that the whole world must convert or submit to Islam by any means necessary. It is not going to happen. Finally, Muslims in the West have to recognize that certain aspects of sharia law, particularly hudud sharia, cannot be practiced in the West because they violate our laws and our Constitution.

Fandy should know that you cannot stifle free discussion in the US especially on such a hot and burning issue as Islam.  It is the nature of Americans to respect other religions and not blame innocents for the wrongs of others. However, if you don't want Westerners to think of Muslims as "mobs' then don't be mobs.

Madonna: Just Shut up and Sing

"Somebody should tell Madonna that it's over. One day she is going to walk on to stage and ask the audience, "Is my son here yet?" This week, she tells a Washington DC audience that it is so %*^# cool that "we have a black Muslim in the White House" (or was it "a #*@*^ black Muslim in the *^$## White House"?

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/09/25/madonna-calls-president-obama-black-muslim-says-shell-strip-onstage-if-wins/?intcmp=features

(I thought she lived in London now.)

And she is going to do a strip if Obama wins? Does she realize she is 54?

How *^#@* cool would that be?

Harry Reid Steps in it Again

Leave it to Harry Reid to open his big mouth and embarrass himself yet again. In his campaign to destroy Mitt Romney, which has already backfired once over his tax returns, Reid, a Mormon himself, says that Romney has "sullied" his religion.

http://www.independentmail.com/news/2012/sep/26/harry-reid-romney-not-face-mormonism/

So just how has Romney "sullied" his religion? Any specifics, Harry-or do you have to protect your inside sources?

Are the Democrats getting so desperate that they have to drag religion into this? It is the last thing this country needs right now in an already dirty campaign (principally on the part of Reid's party).  I know at least one of the mad-hatters at MSNBC, Lawrence O'Donnell, has publicly expressed his open contempt for the Mormon religion because of their past discrimination against blacks.

Harry Reid is a jerk of the first order. He proves it every time he opens his mouth. He ought to get back to the business of the Senate in passing an annual budget-something that hassn't happened since Obama took office.

Does This Look Familiar?

Left: Janet Napolitano-Right: Eric Holder

"Shall we try the GITMO detainees in Green Bay or Seattle?"

The replay official looked at it and upheld the call.

Even George Galloway couldn't believe it.

The reaction in Green Bay was outrage.

"Who won the Packers game?"

Elizabeth Warren's Law License

Or lack thereof

Little White Dove (Note the high cheekbones)

It looks like Elizabeth (Little White Dove) Warren is in the middle of another question as to who she really is. First she advertises herself as part Cherokee Indian, which is doubtful. Now there is a question of whether this law professor even has a license to practice law in Massachusetts.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/25/warren-now-faces-questions-about-her-law-licenses-legal-defense-big-biz/

This woman wants to be a US senator, and we really don't know who she is. If we are not more careful, we may someday elect a president not knowing who he is.

Honor Killing in the New Egypt

Hat tip WND

(Viewer warning)

WND has obtained a cell phone video of an Egyptian woman being slaughtered by a man in front of a crowd that does nothing to intervene. It was a so-called honor killing-an act of revenge against someone's family member.

http://www.wnd.com/2012/09/video-reveals-honor-killing-inside-morsis-egypt/

That man will probably get off very lightly. Unfortunately, it has happened in the West on a few occasions.

I  hope President Obama and his Justice Department won't mind if I cross-post this video. Ditto for the Islamic Society of Kansas City. I also hope a few American feminists see this video. Then they might speak up for something other than abortion rights.

Islamic Society of Kansas City Asks Obama to Pass Law Against Speech

Hat tip PJ Media

It has now begun. Aside from those voices in the Middle East and Pakistan who are demanding that the US curtail any speech they find offensive, now an American Islamic group is petitioning President Obama to pass legislation that would make it illegal to criticize or mock Islam.

http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2012/09/24/leaders-of-kansas-city-muslim-group-petition-obama-to-limit-free-speech-of-american-citizens/

Let me add my two cents worth. I hope these people were watching the President's speech before the UN today because he threw cold water on your request. Free speech is free speech. He can't stop it. I think it would behoove the letter writers to do some introspection as to why Muslims commit mayhem and murder over any criticism of Islam. Of course one reason Islam gets so much attention is because of the mayhem and murder.

I also note the letter's reference to violence being against Islam if it is out of pure rage as opposed to doing one's religious duty. Are they confirming that violence is a part of religious duty?

If we are going to prosecute people because they make a video mocking Mohammed and Islam, we will also prosecute people for trying to have an honest discussion about Islam or protest against Islamic terror or violence. This is already the case in supposedly-free Europe. Just ask Geert Wilders or Elisabeth Sabaditsch -Wolff.

Just who do these people think they are that they can come here and demand that we take away our First Amerndment rights just because they are offended?. We are offended too when our ambassador is murdered and our flag is burned. We wer4e offended big time on 9-11. I don't see anybody calling for an end to the blasphemy of Judaism and Christianity, much of which comes from Muslim quarters. Then again, I don't see Jews and Christians rioting in the streets over perceived insults.

If  these characters want to live in a society where criticism of Islam is against the law, they have a lot of other countries to choose from. Nobody is keeping them here.

Requested Actions From the Amcha Initiative re; Anti-Semitism on University of California Campuses

My friends and colleagues at the AMCHA Initiative have put out a posting on recent developments at the University of California in regards to the anti-Semitism problem on UC campuses. If you care about this issue, here are some things you can do. To access the links in the text, go to the link below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recent Developments in Fighting Anti-Semitism on California Campuses

How You Can Get Involved

Dear Friends,

There have been significant developments in the past two months concerning the protection of Jewish students from anti-Semitism on California college campuses. Two of them are very positive: a resolution condemning anti-Semitism on California campuses was unanimously approved by the California State Assembly, and a report documenting a hostile environment for Jewish students at the University of California was issued by the UC President’s Advisory Committee on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion.

Unfortunately, both the State Assembly's resolution and the UC report on Jewish student campus climate have been loudly protested by members of student, community, and faculty organizations who themselves have been implicated in promoting anti-Jewish bigotry on UC campuses.

In addition, this summer the UCLA Academic Senate Committee for Academic Freedom issued a very troubling statement affirming a professor's right to promote an anti-Semitic boycott of Israel on his class website.

You can read more below about these developments, the AMCHA Initiative's continuing efforts to promote the safety and well-being of Jewish students on California campuses, and how you can get involved.

We wish you and your loved ones a Shana Tova U’metuka, a sweet year filled with many blessings.

Sincerely,

Tammi Rossman-Benjamin and Leila Beckwith
AMCHA Initiative Co-founders

California State Assembly Unanimously Condemns Campus Anti-Semitism

In a bold and courageous action, the California State Assembly has unanimously passed resolution HR 35. This resolution, while not binding, recognizes a serious problem of anti-Jewish bigotry on California campuses and urges more decisive action by university administrators.

TAKE ACTION: Thank your California Assembly Representative for his/her courageous action in approving an important resolution condemning campus anti-Semitism.

You can find your Assembly Member here, then fill in his/her last name to the following email address: assemblymember.[LAST NAME]@assembly.ca.gov.

University of California Will Not Support Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism

University of California President Mark Yudof has acknowledged an acceptance of most of California State Assembly resolution HR 35 concerning campus anti-Semitism and its findings, however, he has stated that the UC will not support the resolution due to reservations he has about two key recommendations. These reservations came to light in his letter to the author of HR 35, Assemblymember Linda Halderman, as well as in his response to a letter sent by the AMCHA Initiative asking him to clarify why he did not support the resolution.

President Yudof and UC are ready to accept the recommendations to swiftly and unequivocally condemn acts of anti-Semitism on campus and to use resources, such as the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights’ Working Definition of anti-Semitism to guide policy and educational programs.

However, President Yudof alleges that
due to considerations of the 1st Amendment and academic freedom, UC will not accept the recommendations to ensure that anti-Semitic activity will not be tolerated in the classroom or on campus, and that no public resources will be allowed to be used for anti-Semitic activity.

In striking contrast, there have been incidents of racist bigotry in which university officials, including President Yudof, without any concern for the 1st amendment, acted in complete accord with the recommendations that they are now disputing. In
AMCHA's latest reply, President Yudof is urged to accept Resolution HR 35, particularly to ensure that a double standard does not exist in which anti-Jewish bigotry is responded to differently than bigotry against other student groups.

TAKE ACTION: Write to President Mark Yudof (president@ucop.edu) urging him to fully support the unanimously-approved State Assembly resolution condemning anti-Semitism and to ensure that an anti-Jewish double standard does not exist at the University of California. Consider copying your letter to other UC leaders and the State Assembly members who co-authored HR 35, whose email addresses are provided here for your convenience. In addition, please copy or blind-copy the AMCHA Initiative (administrator@AMCHAinitiative.org).

UC Committee on Campus Climate Report: Hostility on Campus for Jewish Students

The University of California President’s Advisory Committee on Campus Climate, Culture, and Inclusion released a report on July 9, 2012 entitled, “Jewish Student Campus Climate Fact-Finding Team Report & Recommendations.” The report was the culmination of investigatory visits to six UC campuses by two members of President Yudof's Advisory Committee on Campus Climate, Richard Barton, the Anti-Defamation League National Education Chair, and Alice Huffman, California NAACP President.

Barton and Huffman found that manifestations of anti-Israel sentiment, including Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns, promote hostility and create significant and difficult campus climate issues for Jewish students, including harassment, intimidation, and undermining Jewish students’ sense of belonging.

The report made eight recommendations for reform, including: adopting a definition of anti-Semitism, such as the EUMC working definition, that recognizes that there are ways in which anti-Semitism is manifested in regard to Israel; adoption of a hate-speech free campus policy; access to kosher food, and inclusion of Jewish students in future Campus Climate meetings. Currently, the UC administration is reviewing the findings and recommendations.

Unfortunately, several known anti-Israel groups, including the UC Ad Hoc Committee on Jewish Campus Climate and Jewish Voice for Peace, have expressed their opposition to the report. Jewish Voice for Peace has also condemned State Assembly resolution HR 35, which condemns anti-Semitism on campus. These groups claim that the report seeks to silence legitimate anti-Israel discourse and misrepresents the characterization of support for Palestinian rights. They have urged President Yudof to table the report and its recommendations. AMCHA has sent letters to the Advisory Committee on Campus Climate to demonstrate support for the findings of the Committee's report and to explain why the groups in opposition to the report are problematic.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the StandWithUs petition, that affirms the report's findings, urges its endorsement by UC, and calls on the Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion to work toward implementation of the report’s recommendations. UC Regents Neglect Their Responsibility to Keep Propaganda Out of the Classroom
In early July, the UCLA Committee on Academic Freedom made the appalling decision that Professor David Delgado Shorter's promotion of an academic boycott of Israel on a course website meets academic standards. In response, AMCHA sent a letter to the UC Regents, signed by more than 1,000 AMCHA supporters. The letter asked the Regents to publicly acknowledge their legal responsibility under UC Regents' policy and California State Law to ensure that UC classrooms are free from the promotion of political propaganda. In two separate letters to AMCHA co-founders UC Regents Chairwoman Sherry Lansing claimed that the UC Regents do not sanction anti-Semitism, but she nevertheless refused to take any action to enforce University policy and the law, stating: "we simply must support free speech and academic freedom on all UC campuses. Therefore, we are not able to agree to your requests." AMCHA replied to both of Chairman Lansing's letters, expressing deep distress at the Regents' unwillingness to exercise their legal and moral obligations.

TAKE ACTION: Write to UC Regents Chairwoman Sherry Lansing
and the Board of Regents (regentsoffice@ucop.edu) expressing your disappointment with their unwillingness to exercise their legal and moral responsibility to ensure that University of California classrooms are not used for political indoctrination, including the promotion of anti-Semitism.
Consider copying your letter to other UC and state leaders, whose email addresses are provided here for your convenience. In addition, please copy or blind-copy the AMCHA Initiative (administrator@AMCHAinitiative.org).

Obama's UN Speech

As I write, I am watching President Obama speaking before the UN. He opened with remarks about our slain ambassador to Libya. He is explaining democracy to the audience. He is praising the "Arab Spring".

Now he gets to religious intolerance:

"A crude and disgusting video sparked outrage on the part of Muslims...."

"The US had nothing to do with this video."

Now he is speaking on freedom of expression.

I am waiting for him to say something about intolerance against religious minorities in the Muslim world.

I am waiting for an expression of outrage.

"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence."

He has just referred to the Coptic Christians in Egypt and "bullying of women". Good.

The tone of his words reminds me of the stern schoolmaster admonishing the errant schoolchildren.

Going after Iran. Supporting terrorism. Nuclear Iran cannot be contained. US will do what it takes to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Just finished. Very statesmanlike, but I would have liked to see more outrage over the vile acts committed against the US. I still think he is giving too much validation to the idea that this all happened because of that video.

Yet, I think the representatives of the countries that have seen all this violence suffered a big loss of face in that assembly hall.

With certain reservations, good job.

Jay Carney in Action

I am a big fan of White House spokeshole Jay Carney. He is to his predecessor, Robert "Jokeman" Gibbs, what Abbott was to Costello. Here is the latest howler from Carney as he addresses questions as to why President Obama is not taking time to have one-on-one meetings with world leaders in New York during this week's UN assembly and as he tries to explain the inexplicable.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/24/obama-goes-to-ny-for-annual-united-nations-meeting-heads-straight-for-tv/

Was Jay in Seattle last night? I could have sworn I saw him on TV wearing a black white striped shirt.

Hmmm. At 10:10, the President will speak at the UN in New York. At 10:45, he will speak at a campaign event in Virginia. At 12:10, he will be back in New York. Wow. Who made this schedule, the officiating crew of the Seahawks-Packers game last night?

I'd like to see Jay Carney explain this one.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Correction: (heh heh).

Upon further review, it is the vice president who is speaking in Virginia- not the president. Jay Carney is off the hook. I'd like to see Fousesquawk explain this one.

Explanation: I didn't get enough sleep last night after catching the red eye back to North Dakota from Seattle, where I was officiating at the Packers-Seahawks game.
