Reporting From North Dakota

Dateline Bismarck, North Dakota

State capitol Bismarck

This morning, I was winging my way east to Minneapolis. Since it was a 0630 flight, I dozed off for a couple of hours. When I woke up, I looked out the window and what I saw looked like a lunar landscape. Nothing-absolutely nothing. I thought maybe we were taking the polar route. Anyway, I asked the attendant where the Hell we were, and she guessed we were over North Dakota.

"Great", I thought. "That's where I am going".

Flying over Minnesota, you can see why they call it the "Land of ten thousand lakes". There must be twice that many. Here's a trivia question for all you sports fans under 30:

Why are the LA Lakers called the Lakers?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"One small step for man-one giant leap for mankind."

Eventually, I arrived in Bismarck, North Dakota. Rented a car and drove to the hotel "downtown". As you may or may not know, Bismarck is the capital of  North Dakota. I even saw the state capitol. It looks like an old medical building in Santa Ana.

Anyway, I am here for 4 days. Maybe I can find out how the state is doing so well economically and in employment numbers.

Why am I here?

Trivia answer: The team originally was the Minnesota Lakers.

The the free market snapped them up and moved them to L.A.

Elwood,

I apparently deleted your comment (and a couple of others). Actually Bismarck has everything- KFC, McD, Hardees, Sears and some good beer.

Mine was not significant, I believe about all I said was that a long time ago in my early adulthood, I spent a week in Fargo one night in February. Wind chill was minus 55 and it was COLD!!! Got out of Dodge and headed for Sioux Falls, where it was only zero and relatively warm.

P.S. to Gary--been meaning to belatedly/posthumously comment on your trip to Branson, that is in my neck of the woods. At one time I could have helped you with some free show tickets, etc., but no more.

Lot of good people down there, and although it is certainly a tourist trap, it is a relatively benign one in my view. Something for just about everybody, and a lot more music than the only two real kinds (country and Western).

It is fairly conservative/religious, a couple of years ago the Indians tried to get property, etc., to set up a casino at Rockaway Beach, which is just down the road on Lake Taneycomo, but the owner of Silver Dollar City and others scotched that. Too bad.

As you no doubt noticed, we do have our share of rednecks hanging around (I am not one of them, of course). Story goes that the reason not too many homicides are solved in the Ozarks is that all the DNA is the same and there are very few dental records.

Yeah, this is a very good place to live. I worked in St. Louis and Kansas City (they were both OK back when) a good while back, and made trips down here all the time. I later worked in the NE, SW, and SE U.S., was in DC when I got a chance to come here 25 years ago. I have been in a couple of rodeos in my time, and this is about as good as it gets in my book.
