When I was a kid growing up, we used to hear references to a place called Timbuktu that was so far away, it didn't really exist. It was mythical. Eventually, I learned that Timbuktu actually exists, in an African country called Mali. And guess what. It's not a good place to be a Christian or even a Sufist Muslim-dead or alive. Yes, there is an insurgency going on, and there is a religious tint to it. The usual suspects, Salafists, are trying to do away with Christians, Sufis, and even Sufist mausoleums.

The Salafist strain of Sunni Islam represents much of the problem that exists in the world today. These are the fundamentalists and the Jihadists, who have little or no tolerance for anyone not just like themselves. The Sufists, from what little I know about them, are more into mystical and more tolerant interpretations of Islam. The Salafists do not recognize them as true Muslims.
So they kill them, I guess. Who can make sense of it all?

Apparently Salafism is not inherent in Islam, because there are so many other variations, and the Salafists feel they have to kill a majority of the world's Muslims in order to "purify" their faith.
