The University of California at Santa Cruz (America's Wackiest University) actually has a department called History of Consciousness (as opposed to the history of unconsciousness). If you are wondering what this course of study is all about, here is their description from their website (linked below):

I don't hardly think that's "left," after all, it has nothing to do with any notion of "working class," but with a Ph.D in "History of Consciousness" and a few months at a truck driving school, one could be making good money.
