What could be more outrageous than this? A group of religious loons from the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas led by one Fred Phelps, make it their practice to disrupt and heckle funerals of our fallen soldiers. One family, the family of fallen Marine Matthew Snyder, is upset enough to take them to court. The family initially prevails. A court in Baltimore awards them $11 million. Then it is reduced to $5 million. Then the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals overturns the verdict and orders the Snyder family to pay court costs ($16,000+) to the Westboro loons.

One hardly knows how to react to this world that seems to have been turned upside down on us. All I can feel is helpless outrage. This is not something that should divide liberals and conservatives. All should be equally outraged by this travesty of justice.

I hope this posting will touch whoever reads this blog. These days, it seems to be all one can do.

On the day of the funeral of the bastard Phelps, there should be thousands of people cheering and holding the greatest party this nation ever will see. For this poor excuse of a human being not only picketed the funerals of military killed in action, but also the funeral of Matthew Shepard who was killed because he was gay.
I would love to "attend" the funeral of this scumbag. Of course, they would only need two pall bearers.
A trash can only has two handles.
While I have nothing but malignity toward the Westboro Baptist Church, this is a difficult issue. If we curb a group's right to protest, then what's to stop us from doing the same to other groups (including the Tea Party activists)? Unless Phelps and his gang of cretins actually threaten somebody, then there might not be much that the law can do - as sad as that might be.
I think that this might be one of those things where the average citizen needs to do their part rather than leave it in the hands of the courts. In other words, counter-protests need to be staged - and we could easily find people to outnumber them because as you stated, liberals and conservatives are pretty eye-to-eye on their feelings towards this group. Supporters of these troops would easily drown out the hate-filled rhetoric.
In fact, didn't something like that actually happen and Phelps wound up canceling his protest?
Lance,
I know I will get in trouble for saying this, but if they ever showed up at a funeral I was attending, I would wind up in jail.
Need I go further?
Honestly? I'd probably wind up in the cell next to you.
That is happening and has been for years now.
Thee creatures show up and so do the Patriots. Only we out number them 10 to one.
Plus the media is finally doing something right. They refuse to cover them or give them a platform to spew their hate on. It is driving them crazy!
Lance,
Then think about all the debates we could have.
If we get the same cell, I call top bunk.
If and when you both get busted together, I'll make sure that you both get the best legal representation.
Got a couple of cousins who are lawyers. they are good, and owe me a few favors.
Also have a few friends who are made.
