John Kerry is Going to Iran???

What might have been

Would someone please explain to me why John Kerry wants to go to Iran? Does he need a new Persian carpet for that townhouse of his on Beacon Hill? Really, this idea makes no sense at all.

First of all, what is he going to accomplish that all the other boobs in the UN, the EU and the State Department can't accomplish? Is he going to actually succeed in persuading the mad mullahs to abandon their nuclear weapons program? Of course not. Is Kerry to going to persuade them to observe human rights for their own people and stop supporting terrorism in the world? Of course not. Oh, he will make the obligatory pleas for Iran to turn over a new leaf, join the world community and blah, blah, blah, woof, woof, woof, quack, quack, quack.

"Yee gads!"

Not only would Kerry fail to accomplish anything, but he can do a lot of harm. At a time when the regime is facing mass protests in the streets from its own people, protests that inspire the world (except for the UN and EU, I guess) here comes Kerry on bent knee to give legitimacy to this bunch of mad-hatters.

So what is the upside for this Chamberlainesque trip?

Can you say, "NOBEL PEACE PRIZE"?

That's right. It doesn't matter if Kerry comes back empty-handed, which he will. He'll claim some sort of vague progress or a "historical and unprecedented" deal to borrow a phrase that really means nothing. That's all it will take for the gnomes of Oslo to complete the circle of anti-Bushes that they can bestow this international version of the Golden Globe award upon. (Carter, Gore, Obama and Kerry.)

So to the man, whom during the 2004 election, we called the "French candidate", I say "bon voyage". Look into the eyes of Mr Ahmadinejad and come back and tell us how this is a man we can do business with.

And don't forget that Persian carpet.

Can we get them to keep him?

We wouldn't even consider him a hostage or demand his return.
