Katie Porter and Patricia

This article first appeared in New English Review.

"Once upon a time, in a land called Irvine, there was a poor little girl named Patricia....."

Congresswoman Katie Porter is back in the news today, partly because she works very hard to get herself into the news, but mostly because during the June 8 testimony of a witness named  Amy Swearer, who is a legal fellow with the conservative Heritage Foundation and a Second Amendment expert, Porter called into question a previous testimony of Swearer before Congress in 2019 that, in her (Swearer) opinion, a proposed Democrat gun control measure against assault weapons would make millions of law-abiding people felons overnight. The exchange can be read (and viewed ) here.

So now that the Heritage Foundation is filing an ethics complaint against Porter, her office is maintaining that Porter never said that Swearer intentionally committed perjury, just misstated the facts.

"So you knew that the bill would allow any gun owner to maintain possession of any semi-automatic assault weapon that was lawfully possessed before the bill became law," Porter said, before adding later twice "you falsely testified under oath."

Well, she certainly implied that Sweater was intentionally lying if you ask me.

Speaking of lying back in 2019, I recall an exchange Porter had with JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon when Porter told him about a lowly woman employee at the bank's Irvine, California branch who wasn't making enough money to make ends meet. The unfortunate soul was identified by Porter as "Patricia". According to CNN, Porter really made mincemeat out of the corporate bigwig.

Except there was no "Patricia". Porter made it all up. "Patricia" was actually a composite of several people, Porter later revealed. Here is CNN's reporting of the exchange.

How dare you, Katie.

Before being elected to Congress in Orange Country, Porter was a bankruptcy law professor at UC Irvine Law School. I used to teach part-time at UCI, and in my view, the UCI Law School is nothing more than a legal training ground for left-wing activists. I hope Katie wasn't teaching tricks like "Patricia" to the future lawyers of America.
