"Jingle Bells" Is Racist? Only in Academia

Hat tip The College Fix

It's time for our annual dose of "Bah! Humbug!" Not from Ebeneezer Scrooge, but from Boston University professor Kyna Hamill, who thinks that the tune, Jingle Bells, is racist.

"The traces of blackface minstrel origins can be found in the music and lyrics, as well as the “elements of ‘male display,’ boasting, and the unbridled behavior of the male body onstage,” the author wrote."

Far be it from me to defend blackface, an unfortunate cultural icon from a time before I was born. Yet, I wonder how many songs were performed in blackface that we would now have to call "racist".

  1. The word "Racist" no longer has the impact that it was intended to produce. No one pays attention because of the improper, overuse of the term. In fact, I predict that civil court cases will soon be the rage for slander and false light. In other words, Make my day.
