Hat tip Daily Caller
As I write this, Sean Hannity is showing excerpts of a speech then-US Senator Obama gave on June 5, 2007 at Hampton University in Virginia to an audience of African-American pastors. Daily Caller has just released the video. The speech is in stark contrast to the image Obama presented to the nation during his presidential campaign. Here, with Jeremiah Wright, already a controversial figure in the audience, the race-baiting pastor gets a shout-out from Obama. In addition, Obama, adopting an African-American preacher accent, engages in racially-charged rhetoric, comparing the government's response to 9-11 and Hurricane Andrew in Florida to the response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

By the way; Daily Caller is not clipping and pasting the speech a'la MSNBC. You can watch the entire 40 minutes-unedited.
Is this the same Barack Obama who gave that speech during the 2008 campaign that was supposed to set the standard for racial reconciliation? Is this the same Obama who gave that stirring speech at the 2004 Democratic convention that launched his presidential aspirations?
Oh, yee suckers.
"In addition, Obama, adopting an African-American preacher accent, engages in racially-charged rhetoric, comparing the government's response to 9-11 and Hurricane Andrew in Florida to the response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans."
ReplyDeleteWhat did you find objectionable about what he said regarding that? Did he get his facts wrong?
What's the big deal? I could talk like that if the occasion called for it, although most of my friends of African descent don't expect me to. At the time, "the liberal media" were full of self-appointed "black leaders" announcing that Obama isn't authentically black... which collapsed after Iowa voted for him and they realized they had a winner on their hands. Naturally he was building his street cred. Who wouldn't? And Jeremiah Wright was his pastor, was the clergy who introduced him to Jesus Christ, which is something the pastors no doubt wanted to hear about.
ReplyDeleteWright revealed his assinine dark side a few months later, and I DON'T mean the taped sermons, I mean elbowing his way into the limelight to deliberately sabotage the possibility that someone his color could actually be elected. That blew a lifetime of cultivated cynicism.
Be careful what you publicize... it might give Obama an extra three points in the polls. It will certainly motivate black voters who were thinking of sitting this one out because Obama hasn't done enough for black people. I doubt if anyone non-black who was already inclined to vote for him will give this the time of day.
Only those desperately looking for a smoking gun will be delusional enough to see one here. And we all know how y'all are gonna vote.
Pure Saul Alinsky, divide and polerize Americans to create crisis.

I am afraid this bothers me. I have never been a “birther”, actually believing that Obama was actually born in Hawaii and not Kenya or wherever. Initially, there were a couple of little blurbs that were never fully explored (that I know of), and which I did not follow up on, to the effect that his mother needed some time of Hawaiian residence prior to its statehood, which she may or may not have had, in order for him to have “natural-born” citizenship in terms of presidential eligibility.
ReplyDeleteThere was mention of his having been documented as a “foreign student” for educational financial assistance purposes, which would seem to imply that he was either a foreign national or, alternatively, had falsified documents (almost certainly a crime, possibly/probably a felony??). Perhaps either his father/stepfather somehow obtained Kenyan (actually British, I guess) or Indonesian citizenship for him at a young age. I don’t know, and again did not follow up on, how this “dual citizenship”, if in fact it existed, might effect eligibility, or whether he would have had to surrender/renounce his U.S. citizenship (actually probably have it done for him).
It appears to be factual that his did visit Pakistan as a young man, I believe in 1981 or thereabouts. I further understand, accurately or otherwise, that at the time, Pakistan was on some sort of “no-fly” list for Americans, which would again imply the possibility that he went on the passport of a country otherthan the U.S., which in turn further implies that he had/possibly still has (??) foreign citizenship. I did not follow up on this one either.
This is different. Obama went well beyond mere political pandering and obviously crossed over into racist speech. I must say that if he can so easily/ readily dissemble relative to race, it is going to cause me to rethink whether hs has done likewise in terms of race, citizenship, and presidential eligibility, and possibly religion as well.
Missing speech? It's been on YouTube since 2007 and was covered by the conservative press in 2008. They unsuccessfully tried to make it an issue then, so it's funny/sad that they're trying the same failed strategy again, four years later.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all elwood, you weren't planning to vote for Obama anyway. So your mental meandering doesn't speak well for this clip changing anything.
ReplyDeleteSecond, after several paragraphs of recounting things said about Obama that you rightly disbelieve, but which you imply you maybe think might be true, none of which have anything to do with the content of this film clip, you conclude by briefly describing this film clip as "pandering" and "racist."
I don't see anything racist about it. The federal government may have been less accommodating to New Orleans than to New York or Florida based on race, but Obama didn't say that, and we all know there are black people in New York and southern Florida. Obama said waiving Stafford Act requirements in the first two instances was the right thing to do, and not waiving them for New Orleans was wrong.
His manner of speech is no more racist or pandering than George H.W. Bush, a New England blue blood, trying to build up his good-ol'-boy street cred by boasting about having Crystal Gail at a campaign barbecue.
Anon.
ReplyDeleteYes, he was wrong when he strongly implied the (Bush) govt. screwed NO because they were mostly black. That was engaging in racially-charged rhetoric.
"Yes, he was wrong when he strongly implied the (Bush) govt. screwed NO because they were mostly black. That was engaging in racially-charged rhetoric."
ReplyDeleteOkay, I understand that you don't agree with his conclusion. However, was he wrong about how NO didn't get the same kind of help that the other two places did?
"The federal government may have been less accommodating to New Orleans than to New York or Florida based on race, but Obama didn't say that,"
ReplyDeleteReally? He didn't say that? What was he saying?
703,
ReplyDeleteNew Orleans received about `120 billion in federal aid plus how many million contributed by ordinary folks?
As for the disaster itself, it is true that fema and its boss screwed up. I remember the fire volunteers who wound up having to go through a week-long course at FEMA in Atlanta before they could go to NO.
However, the biggest screw up was on the part of a feckless governor, who dilly-dallied before requesting National Guard (which she had to do), and a worse mayor who did not get his people out of the city. There was a whole fleet of city buses that sat there until they were submerged in water.
But to suggest that this was due to racism on the part of GW and his administration is flat out race-baiting. That is what Obama did at Hampton in 2007.
Okay, you're not really answering my question. Instead you're just giving me a bunch of talking points.
ReplyDeleteAnd the other Anonymous is right - he didn't say what you're saying he said. You could just as easily say that he was implying that the government didn't help NO because the people were poor. Or maybe because the mayor was a democrat. Or maybe because George Bush hates Mardi Gras.
I'm noticing this a lot lately - decide that you know what a person thinks and then interpret everything they say through that lens.

ReplyDeleteGee, I thought I addressed your point.
ReplyDeleteSiarlys--a difference of opinion is what makes for a horse race. You don't see anything racist about this speech. I do. Neither of us is alone in our opinion.
My thoughts may indeed be meandering, but that does not mean they are irrelevant to this issue. The point was that if Obama is in fact a racist, and I now believe he quite possibly is, and is able to generally hide that and/or turn it on and off at will, he would be equally capable of doing so with the other topics I touched on.
By the way, I forgot to mention that I have actually seen documentation which indicates that Obama, at the age of 6 or 8 or 10 or like that, was a Muslim student in Indonesia. I understand that Obama disciples will take the position that document is a forgery. It may be, and then again, it may not. May have been a move by his mother/stepfather to save on school tuition or some other social benefit, or whatnot. Maybe he really was raised Muslim and converted to Christianity. Or maybe he didn’t. Doesn’t really matter to me, I would just like some straight scoop on it. What does matter is the dishonesty where it exists.
You see, if it is OK to bash Mormonism as a cult, which it seems to be, and to at least semi-bash Romney for being a Mormon, which it also seems to be, I am unable to see how it is not legitimate to be able to inquire into Obama’s religion or to demand answers where controversy exists, religious or otherwise.
And I believe/presume you are possibly referring to Crystal Gayle??
