More on the OC Human Relations Commission Cut in Funding

OC Human Relations Commission CEO Rusty Kennedy
(The Big Dipper")

As previously reported, the Orange County Human Relations Board saw its budget cut $50,000 for this fiscal year with notice given that it is time for Orange County to phase out this white elephant and allow them to operate on private funding.

One of the big issues that concerned at least 3 members of the Board of Supervisors was the issue of double-dipping. Apparently, OCHRC head Rusty Kennedy is the big dipper, if you will. He has served in this post since 1981. Last year he retired and now does the same job for a salary of $100,000 plus a county retirement of $120,000 (or is it vice-versa?)

"Ah wunnerful, ah wunnerful, ah"

"Last year, county officials brokered a deal with the commission’s longtime executive director, Rusty Kennedy, that allowed them to transfer two full-time staffers to other functions and had Kennedy retire as the county worker leading the commission.
But Kennedy stayed in his position as leader of the private nonprofit Orange County Human Relations Council, which has a budget of just over $1 million and receives money from the county."

The blog Voice of Orange County posted a couple of articles reporting the cut in the OCHRC budget which give more details.
