The "Firestorm" About Romney and Bain Capital

The Outsourcer

"What did he know and when did he know it?"

The presidential campaign of 2012 is shaping up to be one of the dirtiest in modern history. The Democrats and the Obama re-election team seem to think they have come up with a scandal surrounding Mitt Romney's tenure at Bain Capital. The madcap MSNBC team is calling it a "firestorm". To hear them discuss it, you would think Romney was the CEO of IG Farben when they were a main supplier for Auschwitz. In reality, the entire allegation comes down to...............

OUTSOURCING.

That's right. Outsourcing, that heinous crime that all the computer companies are guilty of. Have we all not had the experience of calling that 1-800 number for technical assistance and winding up speaking to India? (By the way, if you hit 2 for Spanish, you will be talking to someone in Mexico-and getting through much faster.)

But there is a question as to whether Romney was even involved with Bain Capital at the time they engaged in outsourcing. Supposedly, he had departed to work on the Olympics project, but his name still appeared in their records, but the company says it was in name only, but------Who cares?

Is this the best they can come up with? If you want to look at questionable financial affairs, how about that sweetheart house deal Obama got in Chicago, courtesy of Tony Rezko? How about that dramatic spike in salary for Michelle Obama at the Chicago hospital she was employed with when her husband became a state senator?

Here is another "felony" Romney may be guilty of, to use Jen Cutter's words. (She's with the re-election team. I get e-mails from her all the time. Me and Jen are tight.) Did you know Romney has money in banks in Switzerland and the Grand Caymans?

Now that might raise your eyebrows, but since its open knowledge, surely the IRS is aware, so it must be on the up and up. Puritans like Al Sharpton keep asking when Romney is going to release his income tax returns.......

Ahem. The point I am making here is that I am more concerned with Romney giving all that information to the IRS, like the rest of us, than I am about Sharpton knowing about it. Romney keeps saying he will do it when the time is right, and that's good enough for me. If the IRS had a problem with Romney, they would have done something by now-especially with a Democratic president. (They should be investigating their boss, the Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner.)

Here's the point: Mitt Romney is a rich man. As long as he got it legally, that's fine with me. Here's another news flash: President Obama is a rich man. In fact, every president I can think of going back to who knows when has been a rich man. All 100 senators and most of the 435 congressmen and women are wealthy. If you don't believe me, ask Nancy Pelosi.

Here's a question for all you UC Santa Cruz Community Studies and History of Consciousness majors:

How was the Kennedy family fortune made?

a- Joseph Kennedy discovered buried treasure on a Caribbean island
b- Joseph Kennedy won the Massachusetts lottery
c- Bootlegging, insider trading, and market manipulation

The answer is c.

If the Democrats are so interested in outsourcing, I suggest they take a look at Operation Fast and Furious, which involved outsourcing guns to Mexico, hundreds of dead, and government officials committing perjury before Congress.

  1. Let us check this out:

Obama's big contributor and to the DNC is the company that had the Olympic uniforms manufactured in China.

Obama's friend at GM, Emult closes down factories in the U.S. and builds them in China.

Hardware for the failed and bankrupt Obama "Green" jobs factories are outsourced.

Obama shuts down coal manufacturing plants via heavy regulations and buys oil from Saudi Arabia (outsourcing).

Fuel/energy transportation will be heavily taxed, so foreign oil will be preferred.

So, one asks the question: Why is the MSM so quiet about this obvious problem of outsourcing? Is this fraud?

  2. Some very good sleuths have found that Bain Capitol has given generous donations to Obama and the DNC in the recent past. So, it is OK to take money from Bain when it is a benefit to the Obama camp, and it is OK to critique Romney and his association with Bain, because they outsource. I wonder if Obama will give all that Bain money back because they are evil outsourcers? Here is the LINK to the story:

  3. Gary, I get a subtle impression you want Romney. I wonder what gives me that idea?

  5. Now that you've denied some of the less precise accusations, how about this?

"If you were a construction worker or a schoolteacher, the year you stopped doing your job wouldn’t be ambiguous. Having no 'active role' in a parent 'entity' feels like a term of art for a con artist."

“what information he did release provides a fuzzy glimpse at a concerted effort to park much of his wealth in overseas tax shelters, suggesting a widespread pattern of tax avoidance unlike that of any previous candidate.”

"Blind trusts, Swiss bank accounts and Bermuda accounts designed to shield your money from the taxing agency of the country you want to lead just doesn’t sound right."

Oh, wait, said Gary, you're asking about the HARD stuff. I was trying to put all the pieces back together again from the EASY stuff.

  6. Siarlys,

So you have convicted Romney of outsourcing. Congratulations. You have convicted Romney of using tax shelters. Congratulations. When you can show me Romney broke some law, get back to me.

  7. Romney is beginning to remind me of John Kerry. I don't mean, the fact that both of them ran against incumbents, riding a wave of frothy assurance on the part of those who never liked them that surely no electoral majority would support them again.

I mean, Kerry tried to run as a decorated war veteran (which he was and is -- Gary once graciously said that Kerry ranks him because Kerry served in Vietnam), while it never crossed Kerry's mind that anyone living might recall that he led an organization called Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

Romney thought he could make a fortune, perform some civic good deeds like the Olympics, start a career in politics, and nobody would think to ask, just how did you make all that money, Mitt?

Neither being part of VVAW nor running Bain Capital were criminal offenses. But voters look for more in a candidate for president than "I am not a crook." When Romney hides from it and lies about it, it is obvious he knows its a liability with voters -- not unlike Kerry and Vietnam.
