May Day Riot in Santa Cruz

Just as I was about to praise the May Day (pro-immigration)demonstration in Los Angeles, which was peaceful, comes this news from Santa Cruz, where a Saturday May Day rally turned into a destructive riot Saturday night. The San Jose Mercury News has the report:

Only one arrest? That's what happens when you underestimate the potential for trouble and show up 40 minutes late.

It's too early to make any claims about who most of the perpetrators were, but at first glance, this doesn't appear to be a Mexican thing, so please don't jump to conclusions. That would be unfair. It appears more likely to be the restive, young anarchist crowd that abounds in Santa Cruz, which coincidentally happens to the home of America's Wackiest University and its Community Studies Department (which, fortunately, is being discontinued).

Let's hope more arrests will follow and we can learn more about who is responsible.
