UC Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky is once again under fire. This time, it comes from the pro-Palestinian crowd on the UCB campus. They are upset that Chemerinsky wrote an op-ed criticizing the violent tactics of the anti-Israel groups on campus. They also feel that he does not fully understand the "suffering" of black students at UCB.
It is ironic that I would come to his defense since I have been a critic of Chemerinsky going back to the days he started the UC Irvine Law School and denied there was a problem of anti-Semitism on that campus. After moving to Berkeley, he gradually came to the realization, after October 7, 2023, that there is, indeed, a problem of anti-Semitism on US campuses, including his own.
So now a "coalition" of black and pro-Palestinian Jewish law students have written to the campus paper, the Daily Californian, to take issue with Chemerinsky's remarks. I have felt compelled to add my two cents worth in the reader comments thread.
I have criticized Chemerinsky on this blog many times over the years, but when support is warranted, I will give it. As for any perceived insensitivity to black concerns on campus, I doubt very much that is the case. In fact, I consider it to be ridiculous.
