Portugal: Head of Chega Party (Andre Ventura) Warns of Uncontrolled Migration

Andre Ventura is the head of Portugal's conservative Chega party, a new party that has already become the third-largest party in the country. Among the issues they are most concerned about is uncontrolled and illegal migration. With almost 800,000 immigrants, they are approaching 10% of the total population, according to Ventura.

Of course, much of Portugal's non-Portuguese population has traditionally been made up of people from former Portuguese colonies, such as Brazil, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Angola, and Guinea-Bissau. It should also be noted that centuries ago, Portugal was a major player in the African trans-Atlantic slave trade. Now, in addition, the country is getting people from other parts of the world who are flooding into Europe.

This week, Ventura spoke before the Portuguese Parliament and warned of the increasing danger of migrants coming from high-risk countries. Ventura sees the risk of Portugal having the same problems as other Western European countries. He argues that Portuguese immigration laws are too lax. Among other things, he points to a 2007 law that was enabling migrants to enter the country claiming to have a promise to work as opposed to firm documentation that the applicant actually had a job contract. The above speech by Ventura is translated by Fousesquawk. Hat tip to Gates of Vienna and Vlad Tepes for assistance in subtitling.
