Today I watched the press conference by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Commissioner Chris Magnus as he announced that after an investigation by the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility, 4 CBP agents will receive some sort of discipline for the horseback incident that occurred at Del Rio, Texas last September.
Last September, CBP agents on horseback were attempting to stop a wave of Haitian migrants illegally crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico. The scene was chaotic, and some migrants accused the agents of whipping them.
To make matters worse, President Biden and Vice President Harris made public statements essentially convicting the agents of horrific human rights violations. Biden promised that "they would pay". You knew at that point that someone was going to be punished, no matter what the facts were. Today, Magnus came across as Biden's puppet.
But today, we have learned that no agents on horseback had whips. As previously stated, the "whips" were horse reins. Furthermore, no migrants were injured or struck either intentionally or unintentionally. However, the 4 agents were found to be in various violations of procedure as to the radio frequency they were using and the administrative authorization for what they were doing (their job). One agent was found to have used inappropriate language as to the migrants' national origin and gender. While Magnus did not specify what was said, we have this report which quotes the actual words used.

So Magnus cannot disclose what disciplinary procedure is being proposed by CBP since the affected agents have the right to contest any actions.
First of all, let us not forget that these agents were sent into a chaotic and dangerous situation in which waves of migrants were crossing the border and refusing the commands of the agents. They (and their horses) were in a stressful situation. Based on what Magnus said, I would hope that the disciplinary action (which could range from a reprimand to being fired) will be nothing more than a verbal or written reprimand which would be removed from the agents' personnel files after a prescribed period of time.
Today, I heard no words of condemnation from Commissioner Magnus as to the actions of the illegal migrants who caused the situation in the first place. Where are they now? Almost certainly in the US. They were not sent back across the river, they were not available for interviews, but some of them have gotten attorneys to file complaints against the CBP.
And the CBP, while clearing their agents of whipping or injuring anyone, still threw 4 agents under the bus. I don't know why anybody would want to work for this agency given the lack of support from this administration, this president, and this vice president (who by the way, is supposed to be the Border Czar). Our border agents are being asked to do an impossible job. Rather than stop illegal immigration, they have to care for the illegal migrants who cross our border. They risk life and limb and for what? To house and feed these people and change diapers before putting them on planes to various locations around the country in the dead of night. But try to stop someone from entering the country or say the wrong thing in the heat of the moment........
As has been previously announced, there will be no criminal charges filed. But if any of these agents is fired, I wouldn't blame the Border Patrol if they just walked off the job en masse.
