France: Two Professors Under Threat for "Islamophobia"

Hat tip Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, Boulevard Voltaire, and Gates of Vienna

-Limited Times: Posters at University of Grenoble- (Left) "Fascists in our lecture halls..(name deleted) and (name deleted) resignation...Islamophobie kills.  (Right) "Elite shame of the nation"

Things are really getting bad in France. In the wake of last year's horrific beheading of Samuel Paty, a French school teacher who had been accused of showing offensive depictions of the Prophet Mohamed in his class, there is a climate of fear among the country's teachers.

More recently, two professors at the University of Grenoble were accused of Islamophobia a couple of weeks ago by some students, and there were calls for violence against the professors.

One of the professors has chosen to go public. Gates of Vienna posted and provided subtitles for this video in which the teacher described the hostility and lack of support he has received from his colleagues at the university.

Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, a  US-based, pro-Israel organization that defends Jewish students in the US threatened by anti-Semitic harassment, has sent this letter to the Institute of Political Studies at the university asking that the safety and rights of the two professors be protected.

Here is a current article and interview running on the conservative French site, Boulevard Voltaire. It is an interview with Rémy Perrad, a delegate of the Union Nationale Inter-universitaire (UNI), a conservative student association. The French text in the written article is an (almost) exact rendering of the audio. Translation of the written text by Fousesquawk is below.

Rémy Perrad on the polemics at Grenoble (Political Science): " The Islamo-leftists call for violence against professors who don't think like they do."

The names of two teachers have been plastered on the walls of the entrance to the (Insitute of Political Science at (the University) of Grenoble, on posters accusing them of fascism and Islamophobia, following a controversy triggered by a student union close to UNEF (a leftist student union) accusing them of fascism and Islamophobia.

At the microphone of Boulevard Voltaire, reaction from Rémy Perrad, national delegate of UNI.

-UNEF at Grenoble is in turmoil. They had relayed, on social media, posters denouncing by name professors of the Institute of Political Studies of Grenoble who were accused of Islamophobia. Following that, UNI called for the dissolution of UNEF Grenoble. Why?

-Simply to fight against the methods of the extreme left, who are wreaking havoc. The methods of the Islamo-left call for violence against the professors who don't think like them. Assa Traoré pointed the finger at police and was sentenced for this. These same methods of the extreme Islamo-left are used by UNEF at Grenoble. They are attacking freedom of expression without any reason. The professors in question have never shown any Islamophobia nor any form of racism.

-What is this rather deleterious atmosphere in the universities and in national education?

-We see the emergence of indigenous, racialist, and decolonial (post-colonial) theories of certain professors. For example, when Minister Frédérique Vidal finally dared to speak of Islamo-leftism, we see a barrage of insults coming, in particular, from the Conference of University Presidents, who attacked her even though she was correct in what she denounced.

- For UNI, is this Islamo-leftism a reality?

-It is a reality, not only in higher education. It is something that we see often at the time of municipal elections where certain elected officials make an alliance with Islamist associations out of patronage. We see it in the professional (teaching) corps with a refusal to teach a certain number of things and to show, in particular, Charlie Hebdo caricatures.

The university wants to be universalist, but here, it isn't.
