Germany: Car Attack in Trier: At Least Two Dead

Today, a 51-year-old man "with German citizenship" plowed his car at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the town of Trier, near the Luxembourg border. At least two have been killed, including a  small child, and several injured. The man, described by the German press simply as a 51-year-old man of German citizenship who resides in the area as being in custody. No motive is being given as yet. So, as yet, we don't know if this is terrorism. Translations are pending. In the meantime, the Daily Mail (UK) has details and photos.

*Update: The local Trier news describes the driver as a 51-year-old man from Trier who was known to often be drunk, and who often got drunk in a local kebab shop.

*Update (Sueddeutsche Zeitung)  The death toll now stands at four including a 9-month-old baby. (Correction: 9 1/2-week-old baby.).The driver was reportedly drunk. 

The lord mayor of Trier is calling this, "the blackest day in Trier since WW2". (Frankfurter Allgemeine)
