I have occasionally cross-posted articles written by Shireen Qudosi, a young Muslim woman who is among that group known as Muslim reformers. It is a group I support because I cannot subscribe to the idea that all Muslims are bad, violent, intolerant and bent on our destruction. Some are, but not all.
Presently, Shireen is working on a book about the origins of Islam. The title is "Savage: Islam's Origin Story". She has released one of the chapters of this forthcoming book, which concerns women in Islam, "Islam Doesn't Treat Women as Slaves-It's Worse".
I urge you to read this piece. As always, I encourage Muslim readers to weigh in.

I have never met Shireen though we have corresponded. She graduated a few years ago from UC Irvine, where I was teaching and actively countering the Muslim Student Union. If we ever did meet, I would have a lot of questions to her-generally about whether Islam can be reformed, similar to say, the Protestant Reformation, and why Muslim reformers choose to stay in Islam against what I feel is overwhelming opposition. I am skeptical as to their chances of success, but I think we should support them nonetheless.
After reading her piece it is astonishing to know that she is still a Muslim.
ReplyDeleteWhy? She does not explain her attachment to the slavery she describes so well.
As for 'Muslim reformers' i think they are either ignorant, because Islam cannot be reformed; or acting as a smoke screen, to offer the delusional hope to non-muslims who want to believe that Islam cannot be as bad as it really is! The smoke-screen kind of reformers will usher in the radicals to take over society.
And of course I agree with you that not all Muslims are bad. But all Muslims are influenced by Islam, which is bad!
kind regards
You raise good point, but rememeber that reformers put themseleves in danger by taking the position they do. Therefore, I don't think they are acting as a smoke screen. As to their overall influence, I share your skepticism.
