Is The EU the New Soviet Union?

Hat tip The New American.com

Sure looks like it

Every day, the European Union is looking more and more authoritarian towards its member states.  Formed originally to supposedly prevent European nations from going to war ever again, the Brussels-based bureaucracy is resembling the old Soviet Union more and more.

It's not just that they micromanage things from the size of beer glasses and cucumbers. That's the least of the problems. The EU dictates policies to its member states that encroach upon their sovereignty and the rights of their respective citizens.

Nowhere is this more frightening than the  EU's efforts to crack down on free speech, specifically when it comes to Islam, the ideology that threatens to take over Europe if it is not halted. Now we have a EU resolution that calls for those who criticize Islam to be prosecuted.

This, of course, is right in line with the on-going efforts of the 56-member nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the UN's largest voting bloc, to get the UN to have all nations pass laws criminalizing criticism of Islam. Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met at least twice with the OIC behind closed doors in Washington and Istanbul to discuss this issue. We don't know what was said. Presumably, she explained to the despots of the OIC that we had something called the First Amendment in the US, but during that time, she publicly assured the world that her government would "shame" Islamophobes.

Meanwhile, the Dutch government has, in fact, prosecuted Geert Wilders, leader of the Freedom party and a persistent critic of Islam and Muslim immigration, while the Austrian government convicted and fined activist Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff for her comments about the Prophet Mohammad, a ruling just affirmed by something called the European Court of Human Rights (located in Strasbourg, France, would you believe? At least it wasn't in Moscow.)

Let's be specific here. There is no organized effort in Europe to enforce a one religion law that excludes all religions outside of Christianity. If anything, the continent has been drifting secular for decades. What is happening here is that they are trying to stifle any discussion of a very serious issue. Muslim radicals are on the march, starting wars, committing acts of terror worldwide, and trying to destroy other religions. Christians in the Middle East are the targets of genocide. Jews in Europe are being targeted for violence while Jewish students on US college campuses are being targeted for bullying if they express any pro-Israel beliefs. Meanwhile, Western mosques (not all) are reverberating with calls to violence by radical imams. These are grave issues that affect our safety, security and very existence. There is ample evidence in Islamic texts and teachings that would lead a reasonable person to believe that horrors we are seeing around the world are rooted in Islamic doctrine, which the terrorists and hate-filled imams themselves tell us.

If only we would listen to them.

The point is that we have every right to discuss these issues. We have every right to demand that our feckless leaders (with a few exceptions) take steps to protect us, by closing borders to certain immigrants when appropriate. What we do not have the right to do is attack Muslims on the streets or attack their places of worship. If hate speech is coming out of mosques, there should be a way to shut it down and deport foreign imams (and there are many) who are violating our principles and calling for hate and violence.

As for the EU, personally, I would like to see it collapse under its own weight if it refuses to reform and protect freedoms. It appears to have outlived its usefulness.
