UMich Disciplines Prof. Who Refused to Write Letter of Recommendation for Student to Study in Israel

Hat tip Bay Area Bay Bloggers

We recently picked up on the story about a University of Michigan professor who refused to write a letter of recommendation for one of his students to study abroad solely because the student intended to study in Israel.

We know know that the university has taken disciplinary action against John Cheney-Lippold.

This professor has his right to think whatever he wants about Israel or any other country. If he wants to support BDS, that's his right too depending on how he exercises that right. That does not include discriminating against a student because of his/her choice of countries to study in. The University of Michigan does not support BDS, and BDS is not part of its policies. If the professor declined because he thought the student was undeserving of a letter, that's entirely different. That was not the case as the professor offered to write letters for the student for other matters. If the student wanted to study on the moon, that's none of his business.
