"Allah ou Akbar"
A French synagogue was partially burned and vandalized in Orleans, France Wednesday night. Scrawled on a wall was, "Allah ou Akbar" (sic).

If I remember my French correctly, that means "God or great."
ReplyDeleteOu without an accent means "or". With an accent means "where". My Arabic experts tell me that Akhbar actually means "greater", not "great". Greater than what, one would ask. Greater than your God.
ReplyDeleteOr greater than the idols that were worshipped in Mecca before Mohammed took the city? There are old testament references of a similar nature. "Their gods are wood and stone, the work of man's hands. Our God is in the heavens, he has done what he pleased."
ReplyDeleteYou didn't use an accent that I could see on my screen. "Or" or "where" -- its equally stupid.
I didn't use an accent on the screen because using diacritical marks is a bit of a process. I try to use them in my main texts when appropriate, but it's a bit of a hassle.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mohammad, Allah indicates a singular God not multiple gods. Aside from pagans, Mohammad also had "issues" with Jews and Christians.
What does "issues" have to do with it?
ReplyDeleteMeaning he hated them and wanted them killed.
