I'm not up on pop culture, so I don't know who Kendall Jenner is other than she is one of the crazy Jenner-Kardashian conglomeration. Apparently, she is featured in a Pepsi commercial that implies that their drink can diffuse the hostile confrontations of today.
That commercial didn't sit well with a student-writer at San Francisco State University, who ties it to something called the "marriage of white feminism with the appropriation of marginalized activism."

I threw my two cents worth in the reader comment thread, so I won't take any further issue with this young student. I hope her thinking will evolve as she grows older. The real reason I post this is because just today, I put up a story out of Pakistan, one that dwarfs the complaints of this young lady about society here in the US. In that story was a photo from Dawn.com's photo archives. It shows a mob rioting about something or other and a Pepsi sign in the background.
There ain't enough Pepsi in the world to calm this mob.
Pepsi u ahkbar would seem to represent an appropriation of marginalized Quranic studies.

ReplyDeleteOh. I thought that's the way Pepsi was advertising in Pakistan. Satire imitates life. OF course you added the Neuman... he has more sense than to be hanging out in Pakistan for real.
ReplyDeleteOf course I added the inscription on the Pepsi sign. Had it been really there, they would have lynched that too for blasphemy or cultural appropriation.
