Michelle Obama and "Hope"

"Hope" 2008-2016 RIP

I have had very little today about Michelle Obama the last 8 years. All in all, she has performed her duties as first lady well enough as her husband has tried to dismantle the country.  What I really take issue with are two comments she has made at the bookends of the Obama's time on the stage. During the 2008 primaries, she made her infamous comment about being proud of her country for the first time because there was hope.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback," (2008)

Well, we could say that she lived it down over the past 8 years, but now we hear her tell Oprah Winfrey that with the coming presidency of Donald Trump, hope is gone.

"We feel the difference now. See, now, we are feeling what not having hope feels like,"

Apparently, Mrs Obama thinks that hope for America centers around her husband being president. Apparently only eight years of American history have given this country "hope", however she defines it.

It doesn't get much more arrogant than that.

  1. When Hitler was chosen as Chancellor of Germany, no doubt there were Germans who felt that hope had died. Alexander Dubcek's biography was titled Hope Dies Last. (Did you know that Dubcek was conceived in Chicago?) Trump is not Hitler, he's not even much of a Mussolini, although bumbling fool is closer than steel-trap tyrant. But, seeing dark days coming in the next four years is not implausible. Seeing Hillary as the embodiment of "Hope" would be delusional, of course. Arrogance is denouncing someone for feeling less than hopeful about the candidate you happened to vote for.

Me, like I've said before, I view Trump as a Nebuchaddnezzar figure who will take America through a period of internal exile. There's nothing much good about him, but hopefully we will emerge stronger and better from the experience. Fiery furnaces do burn away extraneous nonsense.
