The Milwaukee Shooting and Riot

Another city erupts into a riot Saturday night over the shooting death of a black suspect in a police confrontation. In this case, there is a video of the incident from an officer-worn body cam. We have not seen it yet since it is still being processed by state police.  Here is what we know thus far:

The suspect, Sylville Smith, 23, was stopped while driving by Milwaukee police for suspicious behavior. Smith, who had a lengthy arrest record, ran from his car, and a foot chase ensued. Inside the yard of a home, Smith was cornered by an officer. Smith was holding a gun and was shot dead by the officer, who was also African-American.

The mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, stated in a press conference today that he has seen a photo from the video which shows Smith with a gun in his hand, which was fully loaded.  The police chief , Edward Flynn, has seen the video and states that Smith was raising his weapon toward the officer when he was shot.

I am not going to pronounce, "case closed" at this point, but it is starting to look to me like another Ferguson. We have had one night of rioting over what appears to be a justified shooting-and the officer is black.

Yet that didn't stop some rioters from deliberately targeting whites for attack.

The videos in the above link speak for themselves. I would say to US Attorney Loretta Lynch that she has a clear case of  racially-inspired attacks- hate crimes that has just dropped in her lap.  The Justice Department Civil Rights Division has the clear duty to investigate this.

The question is- will they? I am betting they won't.

  1. A very minor riot. And yes, police are making arrests.

  2. Tell that to the white people who got dragged out of their cars and beaten.

  3. That's why it was a minor "riot" and not a minor "scuffle." And yes, police are making arrests. The neighborhood is decidedly cool to the extremely small group of people who did the damage. Explain how especially important it is that "white" people were dragged out of cars and beaten, to the seven "black" people shot in the previous week.

  4. And who shot the seven black people the previous week?
