The UCI Disruption: Time For a Statement From UCI Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky
Erwin Chemerinsky
On May 18, members of Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Irvine disrupted a Jewish group's showing of a pro-Israel military film. The protesters reportedly tried to crash their way into the room on campus where the film was being shown, blocked exits, and terrified the mostly female Jewish students. Campus police had to be called to restore order and escort the audience members away from the room.
The New University campus paper reported that at least two of the protesters identified themselves as members of the National Lawyers Guild,a radical leftist organization founded in the 1930s as a legal arm of the Communist party USA. Further, that they were also affiliated with the UCI Law School. These "lawyers" reportedly were demanding that protesters be admitted literally as they were trying to force their way in while terrified Jewish females were trying to keep the door closed. I have confirmed that the NLG does have an affiliation with UCI Law School (as it does with several other universities).
Presently, the incident is being investigated by UCI and their campus police.
At this time and to my knowledge, no statement has been forthcoming from the law school nor from its dean, Erwin Chemerinsky. I think it is high time that Dean Chemerinsky make a public statement to the campus to clarify this matter.
