An Incident in Idaho Attributed to Syrian Refugees

Hat tip Dr Rich Sweir and Jihad Watch

There is an interesting and disturbing story developing in Twin Falls, Idaho, where three boys reportedly raped a five year-old girl at knife point. The local authorities deny at least some of the details. At issue is the identity of the boys and the exact nature of the attack. It is alleged by residents that the boys were Syrian refugees who had been resettled in Twin Falls. Authorities are denying that the boys are Syrian refugees and that a gang rape took place. At the same time, the prosecutor who has made those denials has confirmed that charges have been filed against the boys, whose identities cannot be divulged.

Here is an update from Jihad Watch. It links to a local news article in which the local prosecutor denies there was a gang rape or that Syrian refugees were involved.

“There was no gang rape, there was no Syrian involvement, there were no Syrian refugees involved, there was no knife used, there was no inactivity by the police,” said Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs. “I’m looking at the Drudge Report headline: ‘Syrian Refugees Rape Little Girl at Knifepoint in Idaho’ – all false.”
The story, pushed by local anti-refugee activists who spoke out at a recent Twin Falls City Council Meeting, stems from a June 2 incident between four children at a low-income apartment complex in Twin Falls. Two older boys, 10 and 14, allegedly incited a 7-year-old boy to act inappropriately with a 5-year-old girl, in a laundry room at the complex.

“The prosecutors and the police have done everything they were supposed to do,” Loebs said. “They filed charges and we’re waiting for court hearings.” The case has been sealed by the court because of the ages of the juveniles."

It seems on the surface  that Mr Loebs is choosing his words carefully. Something obviously happened, and a girl was apparently attacked in one form or another. Somebody has been charged.

By law, the authorities cannot release the names of the boys. In principle, it should not matter what their nationality or ethnicity is. There is a belief within the community that these boys come from a Syrian refugee family while the city says there are no Syrian refugees or Syrians in Twin Falls. Yet there have been reports for months that some Syrian refugees were going to be settled in Idaho. Many residents are opposed due to concerns about terrorism. In fact, the controversy centers around the College of Southern Idaho's Refugee Resettlement Center -located in Twin Falls. Here is a report from the Southern Poverty law Center on the pre-existing controversy in Idaho. predictably, the SPLC paints the opponents as right-wing racists.

So what if it turns out that these boys are Afghan immigrants, or Iraqi, or some other Middle Eastern origin? That may well be the case. This case bears watching.

*Update: My guess proves correct. The prosecutor has now revealed that two of the boys involved were from Sudan and the other from Iraq. The below news report from KTVB is two hours old. He acknowledges that some sort of improper attack happened but denies that it was a gang rape and that a knife was used.

"Reports that the boys are Syrian are false, Loebs said. He said there is no evidence that the alleged sexual assault happened at knifepoint and said any online report that says this was a gang rape is false.
However, he said three boys who are not Americans by birth were involved in the reported sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl on June 2 at the Fawnbrook Apartments.
Loebs said the boys - ages 7, 10 and 14 - all allegedly participated in the assault. Only one, however, is suspected of having physical contact with the girl.
The two older boys are from the Sudan in Africa, Loebs said, and the youngest is from Iraq. Loebs said he doesn't believe they are recent refugees, but he said he doesn't know when or how they came to the U.S."
