Charlie Hebdo Marks One Year Anniversary of the Massacre

Hat tip Legal Insurrection

On January 7, the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo will mark the one year anniversary of the attack on their office which killed 12 people. They are running the below cartoon which features God with a Kalashnikov.

The title reads:

One year after-The assassin is still out there.

The magazine will be on the news stands in France Wednesday. Let's hope they sell as many copies as possible.

  2. So, you are OK with positioning God as the assassin?

Those who pulled off the murders should be gunned down if necessary or put away for life if possible under stringent security, because they took it upon themselves to kill, not because there is anything good about Charlie Hebdo. Je ne suis pas Charlie Hebdo, et je n'etais jamais.

  3. al-Lah is arabic for "God." Maronite Christians (whose language is Arabic) open devotions to the Virgin Mary, "Yah Oum Allah" (hail Mother of God). Jewish and Christians Scriptures written in Arabic routinely reference al-Lah where English translations say God or The Lord, and French scriptures say Dieu. In any case, the cartoon effigy has more in common with northern European icons than with Arabic art forms -- which never depict God because, you know, the Second Commandment is taken very seriously.
