The Armenian Genocide 100 Years Later

April 24th will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in Turkey during World War 1. (Turkey has always denied that there was a genocide.) In response, the newly-created US Council of Muslim Organizations, an umbrella group for several Muslim Brotherhood-linked organizations in the US, has come out with a strangely-worded press release arguing against any commemoration because essentially, it would offend our ally, Turkey.

The statement is not only strange, but weak. Historians and researchers have been investigating this case for a century. Turkey argues that Armenians were perceived as a 5th column sympathetic to Russia during the war and relocated them. They conceded that many died, but deny any organized genocide. There was a British diplomat stationed in Turkey in 1915 who traveled to the area where the events occurred and made the charge at the time that it was an organized killing.

I also take issue with the salute thrown out to Turkey. Under Recep Tayyip Erdogan, this country has drifted toward the Islamist camp and has not acted very admirably in the Syrian crisis.

I have no doubt that had Muslims been the victims of what transpired in 1915, this umbrella group would be singing a different tune. It would also be nice if they issued a statement of concern for the Christian genocide taking place right now in the Middle East.
