Saudi News on Defamation of Religions

“As part of the overall framework to develop the judiciary system and promote human rights, a royal order was recently issued calling for the formation of an ad hoc committee to prepare a draft code of judicial verdicts based on the Islamic jurisprudence, as well as bylaws for a revised criminal procedures system,” Al-Aiban explained. “The bylaws include special executive provisions for arrest procedures of defendants, as well as procedures for searching individuals and homes as part of investigative processes.”

Those words were spoken by a Saudi "human rights" official-not in Saudi Arabia-but in Geneva.

I would dare say that within Saudi Arabia itself, the problem of defamation of Islam within its society is minimal to nothing. (They are currently lashing a Saudi who criticized Islam.) Virtually every Saudi in the Kingdom is a Muslim.

No, the concern here is extending punishment for those who defame Islam internationally. Do you think the Saudis care a whit about the persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt or the attacks against Jews in Europe? Hardly-though they did condemn the beheading of 21 Christians in Libya. Saudi Arabia is concerned about terrorism only to the extent that it threatens to topple the monarchy.

If the Saudis punish defamation of Islam within their own borders, there's not much we can do about it other than protest and make sure that the rights of our own citizens in Saudi Arabia are protected.

But we should never enforce those kinds of laws in the West. Somebody in Geneva should have told them that.
