The Border Mess in California

National attention has been drawn to the Border Patrol station in Murrieta, California (north of San Diego), where protesters have faced off with open-border counter protesters for the past several days as buses have brought Central American illegal aliens, many of whom are children, to the BP Murrieta facility for processing. Angry words have been exchanged on both sides, and not surprisingly, the media does whatever it can to paint the protesters as being "anti-immigrant" or racist.

Today, the LA radio station KFI ( 640 am) John and Ken show interviewed one of the ladies who have been protesting the arrival of the immigration buses. She described the presence of gang members who have been showing up recently (including today at Murrieta) to side with the illegal immigrants. It appears that the vicious criminal Salvadoran gang Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13, has now showed up in a show of intimidation.

We are also now learning that diseases such as scabies and TB are showing up in the immigrants. Never mind. They ( our government) transport them from their entry points to California and other points.

And all the while, our government wistfully proceeds along.  Remember when ex-DHS chief Janet Napolitano assured us that the border has never been more secure? Now her successor, Jeh Johnson, tells us that they "will secure the border".

And what do you think is happening in Los Angeles, where many of these people will eventually end up? Our city government and the LAPD chief, Charlie Beck, say that they will not honor requests by the Feds to place holds on illegal alien prisoners. They (the Feds) must get a court order (not that the Feds usually care in the first place). Beck says that nothing is more important to the police than establishing trust within the community. What he means is that the police want illegal aliens to be able to come forward and report crimes and cooperate with the police without fear of being turned over to ICE. I get that, but what about illegal aliens that they have arrested?  The only halfway reasonable explanation I can think of is that they might want to flip their illegal alien prisoners into informants. Unfortunately, I can speak from my own experience as a DEA agent that when one law enforcement agency works against another law enforcement agency for purposes of using an informant, the results usually turn out bad for society as a whole. What should be happening in cities like LA is that the LAPD and the Feds cooperate and share their intelligence to identify illegal alien criminals for purposes of prosecution or deportation. To do anything else is to screw your community and the people you serve. Protecting informants from prosecution by other agencies is bad police policy.

All this goes back to Washington DC, the current administration, and the Justice Department under Eric Holder, as well  as the DHS under Jeh Johnson. The rule of law is being thrown by the wayside, and our sovereign right and duty to control our border means nothing to this administration. The loser, of course, is us.

  1. This is such a typical stupendous screwup by an incompetent President and administration. How many have we had of them already?

This is much like the horrendous situation in Iraq. Things have been put in motion while the President does fund raisers and plays golf. If he makes a speech on a topic he considers his work is done. "Now, that I've taken care of that, when's my tee time?"

  2. According to DHS numbers, in 2011 there were "only" some 6000 of these types of illegals who entered the U.S. In 2012, then came DACA. In the three years since 2011 (and two years since DACA), the numbers rose to an estimated 95,000 (a 1583% increase) for 2013 and 150,000 (a 2500% increase) for 2014.

The two phenomena are necessarily related, I believe due at least in part in part to foreign confusion relative to DACA, which is in effect, and the DREAM Act, which is not, or at least not yet. And unless we do something different to what we are now doing, the numbers will only get worse, not better.

My possibly (probably??) imperfect understanding is that illegals from certain countries, at least in Central/South America (other than Mexico) as is the case here, are, by law, treated differently than Mexican nationals in that they cannot be, or at least are not, immediately placed on the next thing smoking back home. Instead, they are essentially treated as "refugees" and are "resettled", whether temporarily or permanently.

If this is the law, I cannot see, except for politics, why it could, and for that matter should and would, not have already been changed. If this would not be part of the "comprehensive immigration reform" that libs/Dems are always bleating about, I don't know what is. And if we can't do it comprehensively, without amnesty, do it piecemeal if necessary. I do fault both major parties here.

There are also other avenues, if the current bunch in power had the guts, which they don't. If Mexico would effectively control its southern border, a huge amount of the problem would be solved essentially overnight. Given that the Mexican government is corrupt from top to bottom, always has been, and always will be, that is not going to happen without some inducement.

We could cancel NAFTA relative to Mexico. We could stop importing stuff from/exporting it to Mexico and the other primary offending countries, as well as terminating any financial assistance and other programs regarding any/all of them. We could close the border with Mexico, as we did when DEA Agent Kiki Camarena was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in Mexico and the Mexican government was not cooperating with us in the apprehension of the known killers. That simple act brought Mexico around at least fairly quickly and effectively.

  3. Not to worry! The President himself is going to Texas. Not to check out the scene at the border but for yet another series of fundraisers.

No doubt there is another reason which is how to occupy his time between the fundraisers.

Here is a helpful list of golf courses for him:

If we EVER elect another liberal again, after seeing the havoc their socialist schemes produce, we don't deserve better.

  4. P.S.--If the Congress will not act, Obama presumably still has his phone and pen. He could already have acted executively, unilaterally, and independently, as he has done on numerous previous occasions, perhaps most notably with the ACA.

The fact that he has not acted in this instance speaks volumes as to what is really going on.
