Over the weekend, I received this list from one of my friends and colleagues. He had gotten it via e-mail from an acquaintance of his who is solidly pro-Palestinian. It is purported to be a list of Palestinians killed in the Gaza fighting up to July 19. (I cannot vouch for the veracity of it, but note that it comes from the pro-Palestinian side.) It was supposed to draw attention to the deaths of children because the ages are listed and highlighted as to children.
Yet what jumps out at me is that the overwhelming majority of those killed are males between the ages of 18-to 35 or so. Out of 137 names, I counted about 80 between the ages of 18-45 overwhelmingly males and mostly in their 20s. About 36 were highlighted as to age if they were children or elderly.

So how does one analyze this? To me there is a strong indication that the strong majority of those killed were fighters.
Here is the take by Algemeiner based on the list published by Al Jazeera:
Of course, it is tragic when children and innocent civilans are killed. Nobody is pleased about that. It must be reiterated, however, that Israel, quite unlike the other side, is going to great lengths to avoid those kinds of deaths. They actually notify the residents of sites they plan to hit to alert them to get out. They drop leaflets. They do robo-calls. The problem is that Hamas wants those casualties to happen so they can show the ever-cooperative foreign press what the "blood thirsty" Israelis are doing.
Let's make another comparison. In World War II, the US and British virtually flattened every major German city, and we did the same in Japan-not to mention Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While we often hit military or industrial targets, like the ball bearing factury in Schweinfurt, we also did it to demoralize the German and Japanese people. We knew we were killing thousands of innocents including children. However, we were also in a fight for our very survival.Did we take the trouble to alert the residents of apartment buildings and cities that we were about to bomb them? No. Israel is doing what no other country I know of has done.
And yet, Israel is being held to a different standard than any other nation in that it is expected to suffer the rockets being sent by the hundreds by Hamas and not retaliate. What hypocrisy.
This analysis appears to be accurate. Good work.
ReplyDeleteI understand that Paradise is running out of Virgins. Or is it Sturgeons, Virginians, etc...
ReplyDeleteIts Virginians. The operations manager at the transit company where I used to work said that when Mousab al-Zukari was shot, he was surprised to come to being serially punched by Patrick Henry, Robert E. Lee, Winfield Scott, James Monroe... and realized that instead of 72 virgins he was getting 72 Virginians.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the Wittenberg Door, which I used to write for now and then, published a cartoon showing Zukari (or however he spelled it) being welcomed by 72 Roman Catholic nuns in full habit, counting their rosaries and waving crucifixes.
