Russia has just gobbled up Crimea, Syria is in flames, and a Malaysian 777 has been missing for 12 days. Yes, it's a mad month, indeed. And our president is not missing a beat. He is talking on the telephone to Angela Merkel, sending Joe Biden to "reassure" our European allies, and, as is his annual wont, predicting who will win the NCAA tournament.

And the winner will be.....
"I got game."
Gary really seems to admire Putin. I bet if Gary were running Russia, he would have seized the Crimea too.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to think the the United Nations would send a massive peace keeping force to protect the Crimea from Russian aggression... or that the United States would do it alone if necessary... but how many Americans would support such an operation, be willing to pay the taxes to sustain it, accept massive increases in our national debt to supply the troops, consider it a worthwhile sacrifice of American blood..."
Maybe if we hadn't squandered so much in Iraq, and on staying more than six months in Afghanistan...
You miss my points entirely. Nobody is suggesting we go to war over Crimea, but a strong president and a strong military with a strong presence in Europe would have deterred Putin. Our weakness led him to become aggressive.
ReplyDeleteUnless we are prepared to go to war over Crimea, a "strong president" and "a strong military" with a "strong presence in Europe" would deter nobody. If we are not prepared to deploy our "strong military" it can be entirely ignored in Putin's calculations. He knows we're not.
ReplyDeleteRemember the term "paper tiger"?
