There is a controversy bewaring at Rutgers University over the pending commencement speech by Condoleeza Rice. Predictably, a group of faculty members have gotten together to try and get Rice's appearance canceled. In response, Juan Williams has weighed in, and I am cross-posting his article.

While I don't agree with every position Williams takes on certain issues, I respect him for being open-minded and intellectually honest. He is absolutely correct here when it comes to the treatment of black conservatives by the liberal elite.
In the past few years, Rutgers has had enough reasons to look itself in the mirror. It has been the subject of a Title VI complaint in connection with expressions of anti-Semitism.

In my mind, Rutgers doesn't deserve a speaker as distinguished as Condoleeza Rice. Al Sharpton would be more suitable for them.
How did Rice get picked? Did a majority of the faculty vote on it, which a minority is now bemoaning? Or did the students of the senior class vote on it, and a number of faculty disagree with the students? Should students defer to the age and superior wisdom of the faculty? Or should the faculty shut up and let the senior class have the speaker it voted for? Or was she selected some other way?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was very small, the students of a small liberal arts college in the midwest voted to invite George Lincoln Rockwell to speak (not at commencement, just to hear what he had to say). A majority of the faculty disapproved, wrote a letter, which was published, explaining why, also explaining that they respected the right of the students to make that choice. Then, the faculty picketed Rockwell's appearance.
That would be a good model for any Rutgers faculty who don't approve of Rice. As I recall, Rockwell was quote in the local paper saying "You can't fight communism if you don't understand that it is Jewish. I am not saying that all Jews are communists, but I am saying that all communists are Jews."
