We have predicted this for some time. Now it is becoming a reality. The Obama administration and the State Department are clearing the way to bring in tens of thousands of Syrian refugees to the US.

Here is my immediate question: How many of these refugees with be Christians? As for the Christians, I would support that. I am not particularly interested in seeing any of the folks sneak in who are currently engaged in persecuting Christians or murdering people. I will bet you dollars to donuts, however, that a lot of these folks will be anti-Assad fighters-the very people who are carrying out such acts.
Update: If any of you readers were thinking, "Well, our government will carefully screen them to make sure we aren't getting any more Tsarnaev types who will set off bombs on our own city streets someday-think again.

Sure hope they relocate to somewhere that has already ballots printed in Arabic.
ReplyDeleteHey Gary, how about the fifteen year old (Muslim) who was summarily shot by a couple of free-lance jihadis after making an off-hand remark "The Prophet himself would have to pay"? If his family had managed to smuggle him out of the country alive, would you accept them as refugees? Or would you be worried they would set off shrapnel bombs at marathons?
ReplyDeleteHow about those Druze truck drivers executed by the side of the road? Alawites? They're almost Shia you know, close to Iran. Those two boys you posted a video of their execution? None of them were Christians. What if they had been one step ahead of the firing squad, and showed up in New York? Should we sent them all back, like that shipload of Jewish refugees in 1939?
Siarlys,
ReplyDeleteThat's a very fair question because I sympathized with those victims just as I sympathized with the Syrian civilians who were being shot down in the early stages just for protesting in the streets. On an individual basis, No, I would not have sent them back. However, as a policy, we have to consider the safety of our own citizens first because it is clear that we are not adequately screening these people. That is true for the Somalis. That is true for the Iraqis and don't forget those famous refugees from the Tsarnaev family. Your use of the St Louis (boat) analogy falls short because there was no risk of letting in possible terrorists among those Jews in the 1930s.
To sum it all up, we take a great risk bringing in people from places where hate and terrorism rule the day largely due to an ideology that doesn't fit in so well here.
there was no risk of letting in possible terrorists among those Jews in the 1930s
ReplyDeleteIf the State Department had consulted the British embassy, they would have been told there was considerable risk of letting in possible terrorists.
And what do you think the Nazis called the Warsaw ghetto resistance? In fact, a fair number of Jews were quite capable of assembling home made explosives and setting them off at desired targets -- perhaps with good reason. They probably had more discernment than to target a mass civilian event.
But my point is not to advocate letting in masses of refugees. My point is not to close the door to entire demographics, en masse. You don't just walk from Syria to New York. Tracing how they arrived, from where, via what route, who helped them get here, would all be informative.
Siarlys,
ReplyDeleteAre you comparing the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto to say, the Brothers Tsarnaev?
No, I'm relying on the well developed concept, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Jewish freedom fighters were considered terrorists by the British.
ReplyDeleteWhich was worse, blowing up a wing of the King David Hotel, or shooting shrapnel around the crowd watching a marathon? That's an absurd question of course -- there is no way to weigh such events on a "relative" scale. (Findalis is apoplectic by now, because she considers the bombers of the King David Hotel to be heroes -- which is not an implausible position to take -- and after all there were legitimate military targets there, as well as innocent civilians.)
And as we now know with 20/20 hindsight, George Bush's terrorists were Ronald Reagan's freedom fighters.
Bottom line: make decisions about asylum based on individual circumstances, not broad policy statements categorizing whole demographics. Come to think of it... that's why I referenced the shipload of Jewish refugees. Disposition was based on political mood, not on application of law to facts of record.
