"Yeah, we're gonna talk about hate speech, right, Boys?"
"Right, Boss."
Last night in Anaheim, I attended an event that was advertised as a discussion of free speech vs hate speech. The event was hosted by Orange County Chair of the Board of Supervisors, Shawn Nelson and moderated by the head of the Orange County Human Relations Commission, Rusty Kennedy, a man who has darkened these pages often before. On the panel were Rabbi Rick Steinberg, Fullerton Police Chief Dan Hughes, ACLU attorney Bardis Vikili, Manoj Mate, Whittier College law professor, and Michael Houston, Anaheim City Attorney. There were about 50-60 people in the audience including police officials and local Orange County city officials.

Contrary to its label, hate speech occupied very little time. About 90% of the time was devoted to discussion of how city council members could maintain order in their public meetings when certain members of the audience became disruptive or dominated the discussion- boring if you came expecting to hear a discussion on how free speech contrasted with hate speech. I videotaped the event, and you can see for yourself what a boring discussion it was.

Segment five
To make matters worse, it appeared toward the end that Kennedy was not going to entertain questions from the audience, rather he was going to let the esteemed panelists ask questions among themselves. I guess we were just supposed to sit there, listen, and applaud at the appropriate cues. Maybe they didn't want us to be "disruptive". At this point, I began to raise my hand and more or less keep it raised. At least the other people would realize that the audience was being shut out of the discussion. Finally, Kennedy began to take questions. The first went to none other than Todd Spitzer, one of the OC's biggest pols, a man who is always trying to climb higher in office-usually unsuccessfully. Don't ask what his question was-you'll have to watch the video. Finally, I got my turn, and I brought up the issue of anti-Semitic hate speech at UC Irvine, my previous letter to Kennedy, his asinine response, and my frustration at the unwillingness of community and university leaders to confront it. (It all comes at the end of the 4th segment and beginning of the 5th segment.)
Kennedy did not respond to my charge.
At the conclusion, I was approached by a reporter from the Orange County Register, who asked me questions about my reaction to the event and the issues on the UCI campus. I also brought to her attention the on-going mess at San Francisco State University.
As with everything Trusty Rusty Kennedy is involved in, this event was a dud-basically a training seminar for city officials to keep order in their meetings and to justify the
Congratulations to you Gary for putting your life on the line at the Rusty (barb) Kennedy non-show. I have heard that the council meetings are deadly boring, but you endured.
ReplyDeleteThis waste of $250,000 must stop.

Squid,
ReplyDeleteIt was terrible, Your Honor
I also attended this meeting thinking that there was going to be a good juicy, meaty discussion on free vs. hate speech. As this is how it was advertised. Gary did a good job summing up the unevent. One thing I can add is that Rusty Kennedy would not allow me to ask a question during the meeting. So I approached him after the meeting. I wanted to know why a meeting advertised as free vs. hate speech did not cover that at all. Rusty told me it was a "training session for city managers". According to Rusty it was not advertised as I thought. When I pulled out the announcement, all he could say was no that's wrong. I could tell I was not going to get anywhere with him, so instead of wasting any more of my valuable time, I packed up and left for the night. I am sorry I spent 2 hours attending a meeting that was not.
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteAll we can do is go back to the announcements, one of which is linked. The event was not entitled, free speech vs members of the public trying to push their point of view at city council meetings. It was free speech vs hate speech. This is a classic example of how this hack (Kennedy) has fed at the public trough for almost 4 decades. What is interesting is that Shawn Nelson was the county supervisor who most wanted to get rid of the Human Relations Commission. After his opening statement, he kept his mouth shut. This entire event was a joke.
I attended last night and at first was extremely disappointed in the falsely advertised event, but after thinking about it, I was not at all surprised. For years, Rusty has exaggerated and misconstrued issues in order to justify his tax-payer funded job. If you were to take his word for it, Orange County is home to some of the most hateful and bigoted people in the country. I would only agree with him in one instance and that is the MSU sponsored Anti-Israel, Hate Week at UCI. And curiously, on that he has been utterly silent.
ReplyDeleteDesare,
ReplyDeleteHere's another piece of irony. Last year, it was Shawn Nelson who was leading the charge to defund the OCHRC. What happened?
I also noticed Todd Spitzer casting me a dirty look while I had my hand raised.
Well, we know what they say about politics and strange bed-fellows...I guess no one's safe :(
ReplyDeleteGary, Steve and Desare,
ReplyDeleteThis issue is not a hate speech, free speech issue. This is a controlled speech issue. Think Provda, North Korea, China, Cuba, Sharia and the U.S. Media.
Oh, did I leave out Rusty.
