Germany's Problem With Syria

German Salafists Going to Fight in Syria

Hat tip Gates of Vienna, Oz-Rita and Vlad Tepes

A German news video with English sub-titles is running on Gates of Vienna. It describes the problem of German Salafist Muslims running off to fight the Assad regime in Syria. German authorities are also worried about what kinds of missions they might be bringing back to Germany.

  1. The laws of almost any nation would allow for any national who goes off and fights in a foreign war to be arrested and interned upon return. Of course this can be abused ... the veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade who survived the Spanish Civil War were not arrested, and I would have opposed such a policy if it were implemented. But one reason they weren't, is simply that they were badly needed in the armed forces for World War II, having combat experience most Americans lacked. Likewise, the Americans who fought in the Lafayette Esquadrille before the U.S. formally entered WW II were not arrested and interned.

If the forces the individual volunteered to fight in are directly hostile to the country the individual is returning to, or committed gross acts of terror against civilian populations, suitable for war crimes prosecution, as is certainly true of ISIS, arrest, trial and prosecution are an easy call to make.

There may be some in Germany who fancy themselves "left wing" who need to be disabused of the notion that Islam is a communist front. But a little reading from the Collected Works of V.I. Lenin should disabuse them of that delusion.
