One Fine Day in New York

Hat tip Vlad Tepes

"On the sidewalks of New York...."

Imagine this scenario: You are trying to get in your car, which is parked in a metered parking spot in New York City. However, you can't get out because a taxi is double-parked and blocking you. In fact, there is a whole line of taxis double parked along the street with no drivers in sight. Fortunately, there are several traffic cops walking along the sidewalk looking for a donut shoppe. Problem solved, right?

Wrong.

Excuse me, Officer. That low-flying plane just flew through a red light. Do something.

  1. In my experience, every cop has their own opinion of what the law is for any given situation, and acts accordingly.

It would help to know how long the taxis were parked there. Lord knows (no pun intended) there's been enough times when I've been blocking someone or they've been blocking me for what SEEMED like a terribly long time, but was really only five minutes. You know, a limo dropping off a family at a senior building to visit, blocking me in, or me, dropping off a quadraplegic person in a motorized wheel chair...

How far away are they worshipping? How long? If this is the five times a day prayer, hey, in five minutes its over. My Methodist pastor spoke admiringly of the Muslim food cart vendor who will halt all business, step out on the sidewalk with his prayer rug, say his prayers, get back to work. He'd like Christians to be so devout.

I also recall a whole line of cars double parked outside a church in the Bronx for a funeral. You should have seen the aggressive way the bus driver had to approach getting down the block in the remaining space (not really enough for traffic to flow both ways). Hey, its New York.

Maybe someone should start writing tickets... but what the Sam Hill does 9/11 have to do with it?
