That's right, fellow sufferers, the Cubs are back in the cellar after a few lofty weeks in 5th place.
"Ain't my f------- fault! Castro's the f-------- guy!"
Yes, Starlin Castro is (largely) the f------ guy. Not only is he hitting in the .240s with fewer rbis than .219-hitting Darwin Barney, he pulled another one of his brain blunders this weekend when he hot-dogged a pop-up allowing the runner on third to score as manager Dale Sveum watched helplessly from the dugout.
Well, not so helplessly. He pulled Castro from the game in the next inning.
But here's the good news. Castro has another 6 years to go on his contract.
"Ah wunnerful, ah wunnerful, ah"
Yes. Likewise for that other mainstay of the Cubs, Anthony Rizzo, whose batting average is now in the low .230s.
But here's the good news: Insiders are raving about all those players in the Cubs farm system who will be arriving (hopefully) in the big leagues in the next few years. One expert even predicted that in 5 years the Cubs will have the best team in baseball, which should cheer up all those long-suffering Cub fans who have been waiting decades and decades for a championship.
"Ah wunnerful, ah wunnerful, ah"
Which means we can add 2018 to 1969, 1984 and 2003, right? I mean it's only been 1945 since we won our last pennant!
"Good news, mein Fuehrer. This is the year."
Where are Ron Santos and Ernie Banks when we really need them? But when the Cubs start winning, nobody ever sees it coming... admittedly, nobody ever saw them actually get the pennant either, they always blow the playoffs, even with a 2-0 lead. I still say they win a world series while President Obama is still in office. I hear he's a White Sox fan, but Michelle is a Cubs fan.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't news Gary. It is a typical season for the Cubs.

Eddie Miksis when he was a Phillie was shot in Chicago by a woman during one of their road trips.
This is one of two really good columns George Will has written. The other is when he asked whether, to a newlywed couple seeking to buy their first home, the housing market of 2009 was a PROBLEM.
ReplyDeleteMy first cousin, a born and bred south side Chicago Irish Democrat, is also a Cubs fan. She says, "Its good training for life." I thought that was a one-liner, but then I heard her expound on it at the length of one of Aesop's fables. Overkill. It was a good one-liner.
