The Media is Trying to Convict George Zimmerman

Today, I cite two more examples of how the US media is still trying to influence the George Zimmerman trial in favor of a conviction. Previously, I have quoted other examples (need I mention MCNBC's Al Sharpton?)

Yesterday, CNN's Ashley Bancroft made  a series of snide comments as to Zimmerman's attendance at a gym where he took martial arts training-totally ignoring the strong testimony of the gym's owner as to Zimmerman's lack of proficiency and ability. Her conclusion was that Zimmerman was obviously capable of doing serious physical injury to Trayvon Martin.

Also yesterday, MSNBC's Chris Hayes convened a panel of commentators who took the pro-prosecution stand in a discussion the day's events with the testimony of Trayvon's father.

Here is the problem: It is one thing if the media is pushing that a defendant should be found not guilty even if it is a public defendant like OJ Simpson. Here we have the media not just weighing facts of a case, but advocating that a non-public defendant (or one who had been a non-public defendant) should be convicted even while most of the evidence is exculpatory-let alone providing tons of reasonable doubt. The reasons are obvious. The case has a racial component to it that has been exaggerated out of all proportion. The media (notable exception Sean Hannity) has jumped on the anti-Zimmerman bandwagen and has a clear agenda. How else would MSNBC tolerate one of their so-called anchors (Sharpton) actually going down to Florida and leading those "No justice-no peace" demonstrations?

What kind of justice system will we have if the media can help drive such a weak prosecution case all the way to a conviction?

  1. Earth to Gary... the media doesn't make the decision... a jury does.

I believe a good 50 percent of what's on the media is pointless caterwauling, and this is as good an example as any. There are just so many channels to fill, and so many people graduating from journalism schools to find work for, they just have to SAY something about EVERYTHING. Most of it is pointless blabbing.

  2. Obviously the media, particularly Sharpton and Jackson, are making this a case about race. It must feel like the old Tawana Brawley fiasco for Sharpton.

A Hispanic light skinned man killed a black man. Some 11 black men were murdered in Chicago just this last weekend (!) but they didn't make the news because they were murdered by other black men.... As are 91% of all black victims.

It is the racism of low expectations. The liberal media gives the blacks a low threshold, which in itself is racist and does not improve the situation but makes it worse. So much for our post -racial ("If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon") president.

Ah well, it is another constituency that must be kept in their dependent state to keep their votes.

  3. Gary to Earth,

The media is capable of poisoning the jury pool, wouldn't you agree?

  4. Well stated, Miggie.

What is really disturbing is that we are supposed to have the freest press in the world and the best system of justice in the world. Hell, I'm a prosecution guy, but this case is scary. The defense has rested and Zimmerman wisely did not testify even though I believe he is innocent. This case goes against all my life experiences.

You can't have race involved in our justice system if justice is supposed to be blind.

  5. It depends on how stupid you think the jury is, also on whether they have been sequestered, what steps the judge has taken, etc.

Who knows? Maybe the jury are reading Fousesquawk.
