President Obama's Remarks on the Zimmerman-Martin Issue

Here is what President Obama told the White House Press Corps today as he gave off-the-cuff thoughts on the Zimmerman-Martin case. It is about 20 minutes in length.

There is much that all sides can take positively in what the President said and also some that can be critiqued.  It was proper that he said something and did it without the benefit of a teleprompter.

The President, after a week had passed since the verdict, has spoken about how he views the matter from the perspective of race. We cannot deny that race is front and center in the issue even though it never should have played a role and certainly not in the trial. It also comes at a time when the politically-driven Justice Department is trying to find enough to indict George Zimmerman for a civil rights violation. It has gone beyond merely looking at the facts of the case to make a determination. They already did that and found nothing. To set up a public point of contact for the whole nation to send in negative information on Zimmerman means that they are trying to, indeed, nail him. President Obama could put an end to end with one phone call to Eric Holder. (Perhaps, that would finally induce Holder to resign.)

I do take exception to the president questioning how the case would have played out had Martin been white. That is a double-edged sword because had Martin been white, or both men the same race, I doubt there would have been a prosecution in the first place. In the end, Obama added oxygen to the argument that this was all about race. Indeed, it has become so thanks to people like Al Sharpton, the New Black Panther Party and others. The President should separate himself from those voices. Similarly, there are extremists out there who are saying and writing some ugly things about black people in general in response to this matter. Simply defending Mr Zimmerman is not and should not be racist. Perhaps, it is time for all of us to distance ourselves from the extremists on both sides.

  1. Regarding the President’s speech this morning, regarding the Martin/Zimmerman case. He mentioned that he could have been Travon Martin and perhaps shot, as in the tragic incident. This pure trash and the furthest from reality as one could get. First, Obama went to the Punahou School, which was an expensive prep school with demanding academic curriculum. He was young student with privilege, not cruising neighborhoods for opportunities to get jewelry with his screwdriver. Second, Obama grew up (after 10 years in Indonesia) in Hawaii, which is one of the most diverse States in the union. Most residents in Hawaii are a mixture of many ethnicities. Thus, racial animosity is rare.
Clearly, as you imply, the POTUS is pandering to his base, the NAACP, the Black Caucus, the New Black Panthers, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, the Radical Left and the liberal media.
