Marie Le Pen : Will France Prosecute Her For Her Words?

Hat tip Miggie

It appears French politician, Marie Le Pen, is about to join Geert Wilders of Holland and Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff of Austria in being prosecuted for her statements about the problems with Muslim immigration and unrest in France.

This is a sad state of affairs, indeed. Extremist Muslims in Europe can make whatever hateful statements they wish with impunity while Europeans who speak out are actually subject to prosecution. The only thing missing in this spectacle is Pierre Laval (Hitler's stooge head of government in Vichy France during the German occupation of the country).

The statements attributed to Le Pen are similar to points I myself have written about here in regards to France.

Which, I guess, means I won't be returning to visit France anytime soon.

(Tant pis pour moi.)

"Too bad for me."

  1. That's "Marine" not "Marie."

We all know you like German beer better than French wine. (Do they even make French beer?)

I'm still not clear on whether the lady said "Muslims are pigs" or "Islam aspires to conquer and rule the world." Neither one would be actionable in the USA. The former would be considerably more reprehensible than the latter, no matter what Findalis says.

Europe has different rules on offensive speech. In the U.S. it has to be "fighting words" that actually cause a fight, and then its mostly mitigating circumstances for the guy who threw the first punch, rather than automatic jail time for the one who was rudest.

But then, Europe has been under Nazi occupation. Perhaps they feel they need to suppress certain kinds of speech that we can handle without prosecution.
