“When students objected to how she was pushing her personal views on the class, she explained that it is her job ‘to educate the ignorant and uneducated elements of society,’” Barham told Fox News.
It's come a long way since we were writing papers on, "'What I did for my summer vacation". Now we have psychology professors assigning their students to write papers on "how they have suffered for supporting gay rights". Welcome to Columbia State Community College in Tennessee.

Dear Ms Brunton,
Could I possibly write my paper on "How I have suffered for being a Cubs fan"?
All kidding aside, this is what is happening on campuses all across the country. College students are, indeed, expected to write essays largely based on their opinions on various subjects and are graded on how well they defend their positions. I suppose in law school, they may be assigned to defend both sides of a legal position. That would indeed be good practical experience for the future-especially, if you are going to be a criminal defense attorney.
Yet, Ms Brunton gives away her personal bias when she tells students her reason why their own personal opinions don't matter. They are "ignorant and uneducated" if they "oppose gay rights", however she defines that. Thus, they may only defend one side of the argument and indeed write false papers if they say they "have suffered for defending gay rights".
Personally, I think that many people support "gay rights" in terms of equal treatment and not being harassed, while, at the same time, not supporting gay marriage, which is the biggest and most contentious gay issue, or disagreeing with the Gay lobby on certain other aspects of the overall gay issue.
Ms Brunton is entitled to her views on any issue. She apparently doesn't realize it, but her job is not to impose her views on her students. If the administrators of Columbia State College have any gonads, they will call her in for appropriate remedial counseling.
They probably won't.

Take a psych course and get a lecture day after day on gay rights. What the heck does that have to do with psychology? Please tell me.
ReplyDeleteI don't support gay rights, so I haven't suffered for it at all.
