Cubs "Renaissance"

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts is determined to do a Wrigley Field makeover so that it can compete with say, the Astros' stadium in Houston, or the Blue Jays' stadium in Toronto, or the D-Backs' stadium in Phoenix, monstrosities all. The centerpiece, if you will, would be a 6,000 square foot jumbotron over the left field bleachers, three times the size of the iconic center field scoreboard. Below is what it would look like.

Unfortunately, the result on the field would still be the same as illustrated above.

Hey Ricketts! We don't want a 21st century field, OK? Refurbish the infrastructure, the locker rooms, or whatever, but don't change the look of the field. Old is good, even if it is crumbling.

I propose a compromise. Instead of some gaudy neon-lit monster hulking over the bleachers, why not install something more in keeping with the ambiance of the 99-year-old park? Introducing the UC Irvine Apartheid Wall.

How would this look at Wrigley Field? I think it's a perfect fit.

Here is my blueprint.

What do you think?

The best thing is that it is already assembled-sort of. It can be put up in a couple of hours. The only stipulation is that it would have to be loaned back out one week every May.

However, as to the improvement of the Cubs....well, results may vary.

  1. Another great use for the wall might be to cover up the puddles of mud that might form on the field during a heavy rain.
I would suggest having a termite inspection, however, because if you look at the wall closely, there appears to be termite holes and dry rot.

  2. Ted,

Well, on second thought. We don't want termites to get into Wrigley Field, now do we?
