At Times Square, the tradition is for a big glass thingamajig to come down to the ground. In France, they burn cars on New Years eve. And just like the guy who used to lay flowers on Edgar Allen Poe's grave in Baltimore every year, nobody knows who-dunnit.

Unless you read the comments thread. Also, if you know how to read between the lines in French, you find the word "suburbs" (banlieues). Then you get an idea.

Maybe that's why Francois Hollande went to Algeria this week. Maybe he's trying to arrange a cease fire.
