Hitler and Erlangen: I Was That Close

As my readers know, I have a close connection to the German city of Erlangen. That is where I spent my Army time as a Military Policeman from 1966-1968. Subsequently, I wrote a book on the history of the city (Erlangen-An American's History of a German Town).

But little did I know that Adolf Hitler actually died there in 1967 while I was patrolling the streets as an MP perhaps only yards away.

At least that is according to a story entitled: "The End of the Thousand Year Reich" by Swidhar Swaminathan in Politics Monitor.

As yet, I can't seem to find any continuation of this tale, and I have written to the website asking for some information about how this came to be written.

In case you are wondering (probably not), Hitler did in fact speak in Erlangen on 5 occasions from 1923 to 1931 prior to becoming chancellor of Germany. His primary interest in the city was the university, which gained the title of "The Brown University" because it was the first in Germany in which the student government was dominated by National Socialists. He never visited the city again after taking power.

Until......
