Fast and Furious: Memos and Possible Conflict of Interest

Katie Pavlich, who wrote the book on Fast and Furious, has an article up in the wake of the first House report on the scandal. This includes some memos that show the intent of those running the operation.

Interesting that former US Attorney for Arizona, Dennis Burke, stated that he never spoke with Janet Napolitano given his background with her and the fact that Homeland Security was, indeed, involved in the operation. Keep in mind that DHS assigned one of their agents to work together with ATF as co-case agent (with ATF SA Hope McAllister).

Also note the reference to Lanny Breuer, Asst AG for the Criminal Division. He is looking more and more like one of the architects of Fast and Furious. It should also be noted that last night's Fox interview of Trey Gowdy (R-SC) by Greta van Susteren revealed that the current DOJ Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, previously wrote a glowing letter of recommendation for Breuer, whom he is now presumably investigating, to get his current job. Should Horowitz not have recused himself from this investigation? According to Gowdy, Horowitz was forthright about this letter but insisted (to Gowdy) that he would run an impartial investigation. Yet, there is still the appearance of a conflict.



This is even more reason why a special prosecutor is needed-someone who is truly independent.
