Parents Charged in UK Honor Killing of "Westernized" Daughter

'Domestic abuse': The victim suffered at the hands of her parents in the year before she died, it was claimed

Sharia is alive and well in the UK.  The Daily Mail has a report on two parents charged in the 2003 killing of their 17-year-old daughter who was becoming too "Westernized" (while living in a Western country).

What a great idea. Leave that hellhole called Pakistan and immigrate to the UK where life is better and more free, but let's don't accept Western culture and its freedoms. Assimilation? Forget about it. This is the side of Sharia that its apologists in the West (including the US) don't want to talk about when promoting the idea that Sharia is perfectly compatible with Western laws. The ugly little secret is that Sharia-specifically hudud lays out punishments for breaking God's laws. That includes things like adultery, apostasy and homosexuality, which we may consider sins, but not illegal, but for which the death penaly is in order under Sharia. Oh, to be sure, the standards of proof are high-4 male witnesses and other little conditions, but it is still the death penalty all the same. It also includes whatever that poor 17-year-old girl was doing to "shame" her parents.

I should point out that Sharia also instructs Muslims to obey the laws of whatever country they may be living in as a minority, but is it too much to believe that in moments of rage, some folks forget the admonition? We have seen it in Canada, in the US and in Europe. The sad result is that unfortunate victims like Shafilea Ahmed are denied the freedoms that we guarantee everyone else. That is unacceptable.

As a parent, I can well understand the frustrations at all the temptations that are out there for our children; the drugs, the sex, the rebelliousness. We don't like it either. But either we live in a free society or we don't. Either we allow whatever religion happens to be dominant to decide how we live our lives or we keep it separate as in the US. (Most of Europe has gone secular-at least temporarily.)

I don't know, but I have a feeling that British society was willing to welcome and accept Shafilea for better or for worse. If her parents were not willing to see her assimilate fully into British society, they should have all returned to wonderful Pakistan. Of course, they didn't want to do that because life was better for them in Britain.

That is what assimilation is, folks. It means accepting the values and traditions of the country you choose to move to, for better or worse. Does it mean your kids will be subject to certain vices that don't exist in the old country? Does it mean your kids may decide to marry someone of a different race or faith? Does it mean that your kids will want to fit in and dress like the other kids? Does it mean they may decide to join a different faith-the faith of the majority or have no faith at all? The answer is yes to all of those questions. That is part of immigration and assimilation.

Shame? The shame is that those two parents murdered their daughter.

(Allegedly, of course.)

  1. "Sharia is alive and well in the UK."

Most obviously not, since the parents have been charged with the crime.

Think logically. I'm disturbed that you are allowed to teach students at a college level.

  2. Dear Disturbed,

Have you considered seeking professional help for whatever it is that disturbs you?

  3. Different anonymous here:

The first anonymous does have a point though. Shariah is not "alive and well" if they're being accused of a crime - as well they should.

  4. OK, OK all you anonymous disturbed nitpickers. My opening sentence was a bit exaggerated. The parents are indeed being proscuted. Yet, sharia has made inroads into british society in that local sharia civil courts are now in operation. The real point of this article is that here you have a Pakistani couple who thought they could practice Pakistani customs in Britain rather than leave those customs in Pakistan where they belong (Actually it doesn't belong anywhere in the world.) The next disturbed anonymous will probably point out that the couple are actually born in UK which I guess is possible too (So was Anjem Choudary). The problem is that we are seeing some honor killings being carried out in UK, Europe, Canada and the US now and then. I find that highly disturbing.

  5. What a tragic, tragic story. Apparently, these two parents are more concerned with their foreign sense of tribal honor than their expxpected love for their own child. So much so that they murdered her!

Why the hell they don't stay in their own countries? We don't need their kind of hate filled ideology here. It happens all too often.

I wish they had more safe places for women like this.

That's a pretty transparent dodge Gary, after getting caught red-handed drawing from plain facts the exact opposite of what they establish.

Could you supply us some factual detail about these sharia civil courts, their jurisdiction in British law, how many of them, where, etc.?

Or did you just offer that spurious claim up to deflect attention from the way you allowed what you would like to prove to color your presentation of an unfortunate homicide?

P.S. It is common that immigrants anywhere bring with them the impulses and attitudes of their original culture. When that rises to the level of criminal acts, of course it should be prosecuted.
