John Edwards Trial-Chris Matthews for the Defense

Today on the treadmill I passed the time (as is my wont) catching up with my friends at MSNBC. After getting a few yuks watching Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews came on and continued the daily attack against Mitt Romney and the Republicans. He referred to the Tea Party and their candidates as loony-tunes and coo koo clocks.  He did, however, let up the attack to devote a few minutes to the John Edwards case in North Carolina, which is about to go to the jury. (The judge reportedly refused to allow prosecutors to let in evidence that Edwards was the 2008 Fousesquawk Jerk of the Year.)

(Too prejudicial)

Anyway, Chris thinks that Edwards is going to walk because the prosecutors haven't proved their case that Edwards knew that all that dough going from the 100-year-old Bunny in Virginia to hide Rielle Hunter was in violation of campaign laws. To back that up, Chris did what all the MSNBC hosts do; he brought in two liberals to back him up. One was from the Washington Post, and the other was a former North Carolina attorney general. (Or was it an assistant attorney general?)

But here is the big scoop. Apparently, two of the female jurors are giving Edwards dirty looks in the courtroom. That led Matthews to speculate whether there may be a mistrial with the two ladies being the "holdouts" for conviction. In other words, Chris thinks the other 10 will vote for acquittal. Then Chris and his collaborators speculated that a mistrial would be a victory for Edwards because they doubted the prosecutor would seek a re-trial.

D'ya think that Chris is hoping for an Edwards acquittal?

"Uhhhhhh,yeaaaaah."

By the way, for what it's worth, neither Edwards nor Hunter testified for the defense.  I only mention it because Matthews did not.

"Chris Matthews, you've got a weak show."

  1. After the way he cheated on his devoted wife, any woman on the jury would give him dirty looks.
