Carlos Zambrano: The Final Straw
It's happened again. The Cubs "ace", perennially forecasted 20-game-winner Carlos Zambrano (now 9-7) had another meltdown tonight in Atlanta. After giving up a bunch of runs and homers, Zambrano was ejected for throwing at Chipper Jones. So what does he do? He goes to the locker room, packs his bags, and leaves saying he is retiring from baseball.
Good.
As a Cubs fan, I have had it with this inconsistent, hot-tempered under-achiever. Every year, this guy under-performs. Every year, he gets into a brawl or near brawl with a teammate. Last year, it was Derrick Lee, the classiest guy on the team.
The problem is that, like Alfonso Soriano, Zambrano has a big multi-year contract that makes him basically untradable. Who wants his contract plus the clubhouse problems he brings? At this point, if they can't trade him, let him retire or give him his release. The Cubs are in drastic need of a re-tooling. Parting with Zambrano would be a nice first step.
